Moving to SC in Aug/Sept...

Hi, my name is Tonya. My husband is currently military but getting out in September and we have a 3 yr old little girl who's too smart for her own good, lol. We currently live in the huge city of Jacksonville, FL, where crime is escalating tremendously, so in Aug/Sept we are transferring to South Carolina, Greenville area. maybe one of the small towns surrounding it. I had my surgery back in August 2005 and have gone from over 400 lbs (as high as the scales went) to 245 lbs as of this morning and still moving downward after very long stall and a heavy bout with severe anemia. Any advice on the areas around Greenville? I wouldn't mind working at the hospital in Greenville and even if we had to commute 20 to 30 minutes to get into town from where we lived, as long as we got to live in a quiet community, we'd be happy. Currently, we come home before dark, lock ourselves inside and stay inside until daybreak because of drive-bys and drug activity that's way too prevalent. I want to be able to buy a swingset for our yard and know it'll still be there when we wake up. Thanks, Tonya

Hello Tonya! I too moved to the Greenville area from Florida ( Miami). We have lived here since 1977 and love it. Greenville has many nice family communities and several hospitals. I work at St. Francis Eastside hospital, which is a smaller hospital, but a great place to work. We have another hospital in downtown Greenville and then there is the Greenville hospital system that has several hospitals, one big one in downtown, one in the Greer area (northern Greenville county) and one in Simpsonville (southern Greenville county). You shouldn't have any problems getting a job at one of them. Also, you are more than welcome to join our upstate support group, we have a great time and despite what some people may think, we are all good people, lol. Hope to meet you when you get moved and wish you the best of luck. If you have any questions feel free to ask any of us on here. Mary

I think I speak for all of us when I say: We'll be ready to welcome you with open arms and friendly smiles, Tonya. Greenville (and the surrounding area) is a beautiful place to call home. We moved here 19 years ago from Georgia, and love it here. Feel free to ask your questions about the area ... we'll try to supply you with all the info you'll need. Congrats on your awesome weight loss!

Tonya: WELCOME - I moved from NJ 12 years ago, I live in Mauldin right outside of Greenville. You'll love it here and as the other women said there are hospital systems throughout the area. We have plenty of things left out in our yard, bikes, scooters, trampoline, hubby's Harley and no fence...and it's still here in the morning. And I've met some of the nicest people. Hope to see ya soon. Check out the Greenville Chamber of Commerce website - I'm sure there's plenty of info they can send you. Colleen

Tonya- I live outside of Greenville, directly between Anderson and Greenville in a small town. I also work at a Greenville Hospital and the drive takes me 20 minutes in the morning (there is less traffic from this side of Greenville, I have friends on the other side that live a lot shorter distance but the time takes them the same due to traffic). However, the traffic is nothing like the traffic of like Atlanta. I am post op for 5 months and if you want a surgeon's name Eric Bour is terrific. He will take you if your physician transfers you do to moving into the area. He has great support group, psych services, and nutrition services as part of being one of his patients. We in the upstate also have an additional support group where we get together and are a good group. When you get settled we hope that you look us up and come for some fun with us. Hope you are feeling better with the anemia. If there is anything I can do to help let me know. Laurie

HI, Tonya, I don't live in Greenville area, but my daughter does. She lives in Mauldin, SC which is a smaller community near Greenville. Son in law works in Greenville; he owns his own computer business and dd teaches at Mauldin High School. There are great schools in Mauldin. I don't know about other areas. But welcome to SC. I live closer to the coast. I'm so happy you're getting out of the big city. Take care. Di
