Is Coffee considered fluid?

I am drinking a lot more coffee lately and I was wondering if I could count this toward my fluid intake? I am still taking in at least 64oz of pure water each day as well.

In my warped world it is. I'm not sure about Dr B's world. Its especially a liquid if I add sugar free flavored vanilla syrup. Seriously, I think that as long as you keep your water up also, coffee is okay. I have grown to love it post surgery. Mary

It only counts as a fluid if it is decaf. Our nutritionist told me that even decaf should be limited, especially early out becasue it contains some chemical in it (I can't remember which one) that inhibits the absorbtion of iron. That being said, I drink tons of coffee even though I KNOW my body would do better if that was water instead. Kathy

Most the time when I drink it I mix in 1/3c of non-fat dry milk b/c it provides a good amount of calcium and 8g of protein!!!

Good suggestion about the creamer. Be careful with the caffine, it can dehydrate you. But, if you keep drinking tha****er would should be fine. Rachel

Rachel, I read in my Women's Health Magazine that it is a myth that caffeine dehydrates you. I don't know how true that is, or who did the study. Just thought I would pass the information along. IRIS

Before surgery, I might have drank 2 cups in a year, on a very cold day. Now, I drink at least 2 cups a day. There is something about that warm fluid that not only fills my tummy, but makes it feel good too. I had to replace the milk and cookies with something. I didn't even think about the creamer I put into it as being added protein. Now I can count more water and protein in my daily add in's.

I think Ms. Debbie, Dr. B's NUT, said that we should limit caffienated beverages like coffee and tea to 2 cups per day... Wish me luck everyone! My preop's on Monday! The countdown to June 1st has begun!
