It is recommended that we get them. There is one thing in particular that should be known. Gastric bypass patients should never have a nasogastric tube (NG tube) inserted without use of a scope to visualize where they are going. We no longer have a stomach and if they inserted a NG tube blindly it could cause a lot of damage to our pouch. I have thought about getting one, but I haven't yet. Melissa

I've read that as well.. about no NG Tube with out scope and no NSAIDS .. I've looked into them.. they can get pretty pricey tho..

HERE'S THE INFO I HAVE ON MY PROFILE ABOUT MEDICAL IDs ... ~~ MEDIC ALERT BRACELET INFO ~~ IT'S REALLY, REALLY IMPORTANT TO GET SOME KIND OF MEDIC ALERT BRACELET(s) OR NECKLACE(s) ... &, WEAR IT/THEM CONSISTENTLY. ALONG WITH YOUR ALLERGIES, MEDICAL CONDITIONS, SURGERIES, & SURGEON'S or PHYSICIAN'S CONTACT INFORMATION, YOU NEED TO NOTE THAT YOU ARE A "GASTRIC BYPASS PATIENT". ALSO, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT ... Due to our sensitivity to sugar, note "TREAT LIKE A DIABETIC" ... "NO GLUCOSE OR DEXTROSE" &, be sure to order a "Diabetic Menu" if hospitalized. It would be wise to take your Protein Products & a couple drinks like Crystal Lite. "NO BLIND NG TUBE" (NASOGASTRIC TUBE) "NO NSAIDs or ASPIRIN PRODUCTS" WE CAN'T USE "TIME-RELEASED MEDICATIONS or CAPSULES" EITHER. &, WE HAVE "MALABSORBTION ISSUES", WHICH SHOULD BE OBVIOUS JUST BECAUSE WE HAD THE SURGERY, BUT REMEMBER, NOT ALL DOCTORS OR MEDICAL STAFF ARE KNOWLEDGABLE WHEN IT COMES TO THE SPECIAL ISSUES OF GASTRIC BYPASS PATIENTS, SO BE PRO-ACTIVE & ASSERTIVE! http://www.americanmedical-id.com/home/ http://laurenshope.com/ http://www.medicalert.org/home/homegradient.aspx http://www.medicassist.com https://elijahsmom.com www.thebattlezone.com/dogtags/medtags.html www.aboutmejewelry.com www.lifejewelry.com www.n-styleid.com www.diabeticdrugstore.com www.medicid.com www.goldware-id.com/index.asp www.creativemedicalid.com www.makemethis.com GOD BLESS YOU ... YES MA'AM ... YOU'RE SO RIGHT TO TELL YOUR HUBBY ... WHEN MS TOWANA WAS IN FOR ONE OF HER SURGERIES, SHE WAS IN SUCH PAIN THAT SHE REALLY WASN'T THINKING STRAIGHT ... SHE KNEW EVERYTHING BUT JUST COULDN'T BRING IT TO MIND. BECAUSE I KNEW HER ISSUES, I TOLD THEM ABOUT HER NEEDING A DIABETIC FOOD TRAY ... ABOUT NOT BEING ABLE TO USE CERTAIN MEDICATIONS & SUCH. WHEN MS DEB WAS TAKEN TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM IN AN AMBULANCE, WITH THE STRESS & PAIN OF THE SITUATION ... SHE SAID THAT SHE COULDN'T REMEMBER EVERYTHING TO TELL THEM EITHER. YOUR MIND GOES BLANK. SHE COULDN'T REMEMBER CONTACT INFO EITHER. I HAD TO TELL MY OWN CARDIOLOGIST THAT HE COULDN'T PRESCRIBE TIME-RELEASED HEART MEDS FOR ME ... HE HAD NO IDEA WHY EVEN, SO I HAD TO EXPLAIN WHY ... THIS IS A MAN I'M TRUSTING WITH MY HEART, WITH MY VERY LIFE, YET HE HAD NO IDEA THAT GASTRIC BYPASS PATIENTS NEEDED "SPECIAL" TREATMENT. ON SOME BRACELETS, THEY WILL PRINT ON BOTH SIDES SO YOU CAN GET A LOT OF INFO ON IT ... OR, YOU CAN USE 2 BRACELET CHARMS ON OPPOSITE SIDES OF YOUR WRIST ... OR, YOU CAN PRINT ON THE BRACELET THAT YOU HAVE A MEDICAL CARD IN YOUR WALLET WITH FURTHER INFO SO THE EMERGENCY PERSONNEL MIGHT GO HUNTING FOR YOUR PURSE/WALLET. YOU CAN TYPE UP A CREDIT CARD SIZED INFO SHEET (both sides) & HAVE IT LAMENATED ... KEEPING IT IN YOUR WALLET IN CASE YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO SPEAK FOR YOURSELF. AS FOR A NON-EMERGENCY SITUATION ... HAVE EVERYTHING (medical conditions, surgeries, contact info, medications you're taking & special treatment you need, etc) PRINTED UP ON ONE SHEET OF PAPER & JUST HAND IT TO ANYONE WHO NEEDS YOUR INFO. THAT WAY EVERYONE IS GETTING THE SAME INFO ON YOU & NOTHING IS BEING FORGOTTEN. WE DON'T FEEL DIFFERENT, BUT MEDICALLY WE ARE SERIOUSLY DIFFERENT & MOST MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS HAVE NO IDEA OF HOW TO TREAT OR "MIS"TREAT A GASTRIC BYPASS PATIENT. WE HAVE TO BE PROACTIVE & INFORMATIVE ... &, IF WE FIND MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS WHO WON'T TREAT US CORRECTLY, WE MUST BE WISE ENOUGH FOR OUR OWN PROTECTION, TO GET ANOTHER DOCTOR. GOD BLESS YOU ...
