The only thing I would buy before surgery is your vitamins. I bought ALL kinds of things and the only thing I could or can eat out of it all is my grits. I take the Centrum Chewables, liquid B12, the SF chocolate calcium plus D&K, and Biotin for my hair and nails. You really want a "chewable" vitamin because trust me girl they are NASTY crushed up.
Good luck and if you need anything let me know.
TWO OF THE MOST POPULAR GASTRIC BYPASS FORMULATED VITAMINS ARE OPTISOURCE (Walgreens). YOU TAKE 4 A DAY & THEY ARE CHEWABLE & TASTE PRETTY GOOD.
THE OTHER IS VISTA VITAMINS WITH CHELATED MINERALS WHICH ARE IN SPECIALLY FORMULATED EASY-TO-DISSOLVE CAPSULES (we can't normally take meds in capsules after surgery because they don't dissolve properly in our new digestive tracks) ... YOU CAN GET THEM ONLINE.
YOU CAN TAKE "NORMAL" VITAMINS/MINERALS BUT YOU WON'T ABSORB ANY MORE THAN ABOUT 40% OF THEIR VALUE & USUALLY MUCH LESS SO YOU'RE KINDA WASTING MONEY BY BUYING THEM. IF YOU ABSOLUTELY FEEL YOU WANT THE "NORMAL" KIND, GO TO THE VITAMIN SHOPPE ON ASHLEY PHOSPHATE/RIVERS, TALK TO MS CAROL (she's a gastric bypass long-timer) ABOUT QUALITY VITAMINS.
THE ONE THING YOU DON'T WANT TO DO IS SKIMP ON YOUR SUPPLEMENTS. WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T START OUT WITH FLINTSTONES - THEY ARE FORMULATED FOR A 40 # CHILD, NOT AN OBESE ADULT WHO JUST HAD THEIR ORGANS REARRANGED!
B-12 ... IN INJECTION FORM, LIQUID FORM UNDER YOUR TONGUE, OR SUBLINGUAL TABLET UNDER YOUR TONGUE. DON'T GET THE PILL FORM YOU SWALLOW ... YOU WON'T ABSORB ENOUGH TO EVEN BOTHER TAKING THEM. YOU MAY NEED TO TAKE AN INCREASED DOSE FOR AWHILE ... THE NORMAL IS 500 mcg, BUT I WAS UP TO 10 TIMES THAT JUST TO FUNCTION ... THAT WAS DUE TO MY HEART ISSUES SO BY NO MEANS SHOULD YOU FOLLOW WHAT I HAD TO TAKE, BUT IF YOUR ENERGY IS MAJORLY LOW, TRY A 2nd DOSE A DAY & SEE IF THAT HELPS.
CALCIUM CITRATE ... (not, not, not CALCIUM CARBONATE) ... TWIN LABS HAS A CHEWABLE AT THE VITAMIN SHOPPE ... YOU TAKE 4 A DAY & THEY TASTE SOMETHING LIKE A SWEET TART.
AN EXTRA ONE IS BIOTIN & THIS IS FOR YOUR HAIR, SKIN & NAILS BECAUSE THEY WILL GET IN REALLY BAD CONDITION AFTER SURGERY AS YOUR BODY TAKES ALL THE NUTRIENTS IT CAN TO HEAL YOU, WHICH TAKES ABOUT 3 MONTHS.
IF YOU NEED IRON, YOUR DOCTOR/SURGEON WILL TELL YOU THAT. DO NOT TAKE THIS UNLESS HE/SHE PRESCRIBES IT.
GOD BLESS YOU ... DAWN & NICk
I'M WITH MS THERESA ON THE BABY FOOD ISSUE. VERY FEW PEOPLE CAN ACTUALLY DO THE BABY FOOD ROUTE. PERSONALLY, I'D GET ADULT FOOD & PUREE IT IN A BLENDER OR MAGIC BULLET.
TRY CREAMED SOUPS, LOW FAT/CARB YOGURT, SF POPCICLES ... PROTEIN PUDDING ... PROTEIN JELLO ... I'M NOT A FAN OF GRITS & MASHED POTATOES, BUT MANY DID VERY WELL ON THESE IN THE BEGINNING (I dumped miserably on any white carb) ... SOME CAN TOLERATE SCRAMBLED EGGS, SOME CAN'T - EGGS ARE A 50/50 CHANCE ... NSA APPLE SAUCE ... COTTAGE CHEESE ...
REMEMBER, YOUR ENTIRE "MEAL" WILL BE NO MORE THAN ABOUT 2-3 MINI BITES OR SIPS IN THE BEGINNING. I LIVED ON CREAM OF SHRIMP SOUP WITH THOSE ITTY BITTY COOKED SHRIMP ADDED TO IT. A CAN COULD LAST ME A WEEK ... I WOULD HAVE TO THROW SOME AWAY CUZ I COULDN'T EAT IT FAST ENOUGH. SO, DON'T OVER BUY.
GOD BLESS YOU ... DAWN & NICk
On the baby food thing......you may just want to buy one or two because I bought quite a few and could not eat any of them at all. They are gross and made me sick. I am not sure about anyone else, just speaking for myself but no one I know ate babyfood. I don't even know who told me to eat baby food. Just my two cents worth as you are going to buy lots of things you can't eat after surgery and it is going to go to waste. That is part of WLS. Anyway, good luck and if you need anything let us know.

I think the only people MUSC is having follow a pre-op diet is those that have the lap band. But not sure. My pre-op diet was like Mary's if it was food, especially if I thought it was the last time I would enjoy eating it, I ate it. My last meal was a spicy chicken salad, did not know if I would be able to handle spicy food after surgery, a reeses peanut butter egg and a Cadberry (sp) Creme egg and a Mountain Dew. So enjoy all your last meals.

THE MUSC BARIATRIC PROGRAM IS EVER CHANGING & IMPROVING SO IT COULD BE DIFFERENT NOW, BUT 18 MONTHS AGO, WE WEREN'T REQUIRED TO HAVE A PRE-OP DIET. NICK & I HIT EVERY RESTUARANT WE LOVED & I ATE A ZILLION "LAST MEALS" UNTIL ONE DAY, I JUST GOT SO SICK OF EATING THAT I DECIDED TO STAR****CHING MY FOOD INTAKE. I DON'T REMEMBER THE EXACT AMOUNT ... I THINK IT'S IN MY PROFILE, BUT I THINK I LOST OVER 10 #s WHICH WAS SO GOOD FOR ME CUZ I GOT "LAZY BLADDER" IN THE HOSPITAL & PUT ON 11.0 #s OF FLUIDS IN 2 1/2 DAYS ... THAT TOOK ME A WEEK TO LOSE. BUT, JUST THINK HOW MUCH MORE MISERABLE I WOULD HAVE FELT IF I HADN'T LOST THAT 10+ POUNDS BEFORE SURGERY.
THERE IS ALSO A MEDICAL CONDITION MOST OBESE PEOPLE SUFFER WITH ... IT'S CALLED FATTY LIVER SYNDROME ... &, IF IT IS BAD ENOUGH IN THE MOST EXTREME CASES, IT CAN ACTUALLY INTERFERE WITH SURGERY SO MUCH THAT AN OPEN WOULD HAVE TO BE DONE INSTEAD OF A LAP. SO, IF YOU DO A LITTLE EXERCISE & DIET PRIOR TO SURGERY, LOSING A FEW POUNDS, YOUR LIVER ACTUALLY RELEASES SOME OF ITS FATTINESS ... YOU'LL HAVE AN EASIER TIME OF IT FROM SURGERY & THE SURGEON WILL HAVE AN EASIER TIME MOVING IT AROUND WHEN HE NEEDS THE LIVER MOVED OUT OF THE WAY LAPORASCOPICALLY (sp?).
ALSO, YOUR BODY & YOUR MINDSET WILL BE IN THE "LOSING" MODE FROM THE GET-GO ... THAT'S A PLUS IN ANY GASTRIC BYPASS PATIENT!!!!!!!!!
JUST START MAKING SOME POSITIVE CHANGES ... BABY STEPS ARE JUST FINE ... A FEW POUNDS OFF & A LITTLE MORE STRENGTH & THAT WILL DO WONDERS FOR YOU.
