Here is an article from the Greenville news on weighing frequently. Some research has suggested that women who check their weight frequently are more likely to be depressed. But a new study from the University of Minnesota did not make that connection and also found that women over age 40 who step on the scale daily tend to have a lower body-mass index. Lead researcher Jennifer Linde said daily monitoring could be a healthy way to keep tabs on things. The findings came from a study of more than 4,600 women between the ages of 40 and 65 who are enrolled in the Group Health Cooperative. However, it was not a true experiment based on randomized groups or a using a control group for comparison. So, since I am way over 40, I shouldn't feel quilty about weighing every morning, lol. Mary

IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO KNOW IF THOSE WOMEN WHO WERE DEPRESSED WERE SUCCEEDING OR FAILING AT WEIGHT LOSS/CONTROL. MAYBE THAT'S WHERE THE DEPRESSION COMES IN ... THEY'RE NOT SUCCEEDING LIKE WE ARE ... HECK, BEFORE SURGERY, I HATED THE SCALES BECAUSE THEY ONLY MOVED UP. NOW, THE STALLS CAN BE FRUSTRATING, BUT MY SCALES HAVE GONE DOWN 112 #s ... WHO CAN BE DEPRESSED AFTER THAT? NOT ME! I STILL WEIGH EVERY SINGLE DAY & I WRITE MY WEIGHT ON A CALENDAR THAT IS RIGHT ABOVE MY SCALES SO I ALWAYS KNOW MY WEIGHT PATTERN. GOD BLESS YOU ... I write mine amost daily on my dayplanner so I can see over the month how I am doing and use in conjunction with food journal so I can see that "hey that little extra carb helped me or hurt me" So I feel now guilt about weighing daily. I knew we were a lot a like! Joan

WRITING IT DOWN IS THE WISEST & SAFEST WAY TO FOLLOW YOUR PROGRESS ... WE WERE JUST GIVEN GRAPHS AT THE MUSC SUPPORT GROUP MEETING TO FILL IN OUR WEIGHT LOSS #s SO YOU CAN VISUALLY SEE OUR OVERALL WEIGHT LOSS PATTERN. IT WAS AN INTERESTING CONCEPT ... THE DOC FLASHED A GRAPH QUICKLY & ASKED IF THE WEIGHT WAS GOING UP OR DOWN. AT FIRST GLANCE, IT LOOKED LIKE IT WAS GOING UP BECAUSE THERE WAS A BIG BUMP IN THE GRAPH WHERE THERE HAD BEEN SOME REGAINING OF WEIGHT, BUT WHEN YOU STUDIED THE GRAPH, OVER THE LONG HAUL, THERE WAS A CONSISTENT WEIGHT LOSS (except for that 1 bump). THE WAY OUR MINDS WOULD WORK IS TO REMIND US THAT WE WERE NOT LOSING WEIGHT JUST BECAUSE OF THAT ONE PROBLEM AREA, & THAT ERROR IN OUR THINKING WOULD SABATOGE OUR FUTURE WEIGHT LOSS. BUT, IF WE SEE IT WITH OUR EYES, WE CAN OVERRIDE THE NEGATIVE REMINDER OF THAT 1 TIME WHEN WE REGAINED A FEW POUNDS & THEN WE CONTINUE LOSING. IT'S INTERESTING HOW WHAT WE "THINK" IS REAL, MAY NOT BE. GOD BLESS YOU ... DAWN & NICk

My therapist told me to stop weighing everyday. I told her that when I did stop weighing everyday, I had actually gained weight. And that sent me into a HUGE depression. So I still weigh at least every other day. Its too easy for me to lose track and it is sooo hard to get the weight off now. I don't write it down though. I don't like written records of anything...
