Thin Hair
I am four months out and have lost 73 pounds. I am starting to lose my hair.
Not just a little either. Are there any of you that has had this problem and did it ever thicken back up or did your hair just stay thin? My doctors wants to check my blood work to make sure there isn't anything going on and the nurse said she thought it will thicken up again. If it keeps coming out at the rate it is, I am not sure there will be alot there.
It just started really coming out about 3 weeks ago, my shirt is always full of hair. If I run my hands through my hair I'll have a lot of lose hair come out. I hope I'm not going bald.

Tanya,
Sadly enough, it's normal to lose hair after any surgery (my sister-in-law is currently losing hair after her c-section in May). I thought I'd head off losing hair by starting to take Hair, Skin, and Nails vitamins BEFORE my surgery and started taking them again as soon as I could take pills that size again, but it didn't really help. I still take them three times a day (I'm over a year out) and I've stopped losing hair and my nails are really strong now!
The hair does grow back. But I don't know of anyone who hasn't lost hair after surgery.

Hey there
I am just over a year out and am still losing hair. I can tell it has slowed down but I am still losing it. Luckily, I started with a lot of hair. That being said, it is 100% normal to lose hair after any major surgery...it is one of the body's reactions to the anesth./meds/truma of surgery. However, we (Gastric By-Pass pts.) tend to lose hair more because of the malnurshiment (sp?) issues. We have less protein in our bodies so we lose hair and our nails get very thin.
It should get better with time...as you are able to eat more your hair & nails should strengthen. You need to make sure you are getting all your protein in and you can take a "hair & nail" supplement. I take Biotin on a daily basis...some people take Hair, Nail & Skin. Either way, just be patient.
That being said, yes, your doctor does need to do blood work to make sure you protien level isn't too low. At least you will know if you need to start uping your protien intake to help with the hair loss.

PS: this was my biggest fear from surgery too...now, I just look at it as an unfortunate but temporary side effect.

Judy,
You won't go bald.
Unfortunately, it's normal. Get some Hair, Skin and Nails vitamins and start taking them, three a day (or just get Biotin, but the HSN vitamins have 3,000 of biotin in them as well as other good for you stuff). I remember when I stopped wearing a black shirt because of all the hair that showed up on it! Hang in there!

Thanks so much everyone, I have started the Hair, skin and nail pill. I'd trade thin hair and thin body over what I was 4 months ago, any day. I guess I just needed to hear that it will slow down and that some of you guys also lost alot of hair. I know some is normal but I was feeling like I was losing to much. My hair wasn't very thick to start with.
Thanks again,
Judy
