My mother is being discharged from the hospital in Virgina tomorrow to go home from her little adventure. She had breast biopsy on 12-29 which came back as benign cyst, but then she developed an abscess at the site of the anthesia incision. (As a Coumadin patient with an artificial aortic valve, she should have had antibiotics before the biopsy and she asked and was told by the doctor she did not need them. They did not listen to her when she told them she ALWAYS gets antibiotics, not just when dental work was done, but they did not take her word for it OR call her doctor to substantiate.) She was put on oral antibiotics Wednesday as her breast was red and hot and she had chills and fever. She developed diarrhea so bad that she could not leave the house Friday to see the doctor (if you know what I mean). Nevertheless, she was admitted thru the ER Saturday for IV antibiotics and IV fluids for dehydration. Ultrasound on Sunday morning showed abscess. Vitamin K IV and frozen plasma to get her INR to proper level for surgery. Saturday night general anesthesia to lance it. Felt MUCH better Sunday (she says DRUGS R GOOD sometimes). Heparin and antibiotics by IV. Surgeon told her today she is going home tomorrow. My mother, my family and I would like to thank everyone for the prayer support. We know where our help comes from, the Lord, and from wonderful, supportive friends like you. You are Debby

WE'RE SOOOOOOOOO GLAD THAT YOUR MOMMA IS BETTER & GOING HOME, MS DEBBY! THE AGGRAVATING THING IS THAT THIS SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED & SHE SHOULD NEVER HAVE HAD TO GO THROUGH THIS. I HOPE Y'ALL DOCUMENT THIS & SEND COPIES TO THE PARTIES INVOLVED, YOUR FAMILY PHYSICIAN &, INCLUDE HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT WHERE SHE HAD TO BE ADMITTED BECAUSE OF THIS SCREW UP. YOU MIGHT EVEN CC: A COPY TO YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY AS THEY SET DOWN POLICY RULES FOR EACH PROCEDURE. A LETTER OF APPRECIATION & A LETTER OF COMPLAINT ON FILE MAKES A BIG IMPACT. SAME THING HAPPENED WHEN MS TOWANA WAS IN THE HOSPITAL REGARDING BEING TREATED AS IF SHE WERE DIABETIC & ABOUT HER PAIN ... I FINALLY GOT THEM TO PUT ON HER RECORD TO TREAT HER LIKE A DIABETIC & THEY BROUGHT HER A DIABETIC DINNER AFTER BRINGING HER A SUGAR-FILLED MEAL FIRST. THEN, NEITHER OF US GAVE UP TELLING THEM OVER & OVER THAT IT WAS A DIFFERENT TYPE OF PAIN UNTILL ONE NURSE FIGURED IT OUT & TOLD MS TOWANA TO TELL THEM THAT IT FEELS LIKE THUS-&-SUCH. AS SOON AS SHE DID, THEY FIGURED OUT WHAT IT WAS & WHA-LAH, THEY GOT HER ON THE RIGHT PAIN MEDS. I KNOW I SOUND LIKE A BROKEN RECORD SOOOO MANY TIMES, BUT LADIES & GENTS, DEBBY'S MOMMA'S CASE IS A PRIME EXAMPLE WHY WE HAVE TO BE PROACTIVE, ASSERTIVE & REFUSE TO ALLOW MEDICAL PERSONNEL TO IGNORE WHAT WE KNOW IS CORRECT FOR OUR BODIES. BEING A GASTRIC BYPASS PATIENT, EACH OF YOU HAS SO MANY THINGS THAT CAN'T BE HANDLED PAR TO COURSE. ... WRITE THESE MEDICAL/DRUG ISSUES DOWN & KEEP A COPY IN YOUR PURSE, WALLET ... GET A MEDIC ALERT BRACELET (I need to take my own advice) ... DON'T GIVE UP WHEN A DOCTOR/NURSE IGNORES YOU ... EDUCATE THEM, THEN HIT THEM OVER THE HEAD WITH A 2x4 GOD BLESS YOU ... DAWN & NICk
