Skin Rash

I have a skin rash around the area of my drain site. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can put on it to make it feel a little better? Rachel

Its from the adhesive in whatever you are using. I used EVERYTHING. Calamine lotion, A&D Ointment, Hydrocortisone cream, putting Mylanta on my skin and letting it dry before putting the tape on, etc. The hydrocortisone cream helped the most with the itching. It was awful. It only got better when I started needing less tape to cover the area. Then I used all that other stuff to help it heal. Try the washcloth in your waistband trick when you can. That durned tape - even the expensive "sensitive" skin type, absolutely tore up my skin...and my skin is not sensitive at all! Hopefully it doesn't bother you too much. It mostly bothered me when changing the dressing. Be careful not to scratch. I poked my finger under my dressing to scratch one time while I was half asleep in the middle of the night and my FINGER slipped into my drain site! Talk about wide awake in an instant. It didn't hurt, it was just really funky feeling! This is just another one of those things we have to get through. :sigh: Kathy

Is your drain out?? Our doctor/nurses said to put nothing around it but soap and water, and then to let it air dry. I kept sterile packing on top with a little bit of tape while it was healing, but if you gook it up with some ointments, it can trap bacteria and also not allow it to heal properly.
