I've been on Coumadin for over 20 years now due to a heart valve replacement. My only concern is how did the time in the hospital and the operation change due to having to use coumadin, what percautions were made for this? I go for my consult on Thursday, I'm so excited and praying they will take me.

I do not know the answer to your question. I just wanted to wish you luck on Thursday. I am supposing since you are in Charleston you are going to MUSC. You will love DR. Byrne and his staff. If you have not already start writing down your questions, do so and take them with you. It will be a whirlwind on Thursday. Just remember it is an information gathering session not only for them, but also for you. Good Luck and keep us posted. Hugs Julie

Not sure about the Coumadin issue, but I have a serious heart condition & here's what I know about MUSC, Dr Byrne & his 6 West staff ... They are the ABSOLUTE BEST ... They brought me through surgery with flying colors ... I didn't need one drop of pain medication after surgery ... &, as far as I'm concerned, they saved my life with this surgery. Be sure to have all your questions written down & tell whichever surgeon you see that you need some answers - they will take the time you need, otherwise, your consult will fly by. Check out my notes on Sept 1, 2005 ... I described my all day-consult appointments & then my final pre-op appointment a couple weeks later. It'll give you an idea what to expect. I've put a lot of information in my profile ... not just my personal journaling, so check out the titles & maybe there's something that will benefit you. I'm in the process of editing & adding pics but it's taking me longer than I thought it would ... still, good info is there ... anything from a website that shows an actual gastric bypass surgery, to information on problems that could arise, to rules to follow with your new pouch, to emotional issues you may encounter. to how much protein & fluids you need ... just about anything you want to know. Because of the kind of heart condition I have ... Electrical impulse ... The surgery can't help it, but every co-morb I had was completely gone within 5 weeks ... I am off 29 doses of meds a day ... &, my bloodwork came back normal for the first time in over 2 decades ... Even better readings than my own doctor's bloodwork ... So, you are looking forward to better health, Ms Linda!!!!!!!!!! Good luck & let us know how everything goes for you. God bless you ... Dawn & Nick
