Fruit after surgery...

It just dawned on me tonight when I went to get Fresh, Yummy, Juicy, SC peaches, that I didn't know if I would be able to eat them after surgery. I can eat 2 or 3 at a time. I know that will change but can I still have a few in a day? Also, what are the free foods on optifast? Are you allowed any fruit? I love fruit but as you can. However, I didn't get fat from eating fruit...I love other stuff too!! Rachel

Some people can not handle fruit after surgery, some can. I have tried bananas (in my protein drinks), watermelon, and red grapefruit. I am able to tolerate those very well. I would mix a protein drink with frozen peaches. You probably will not be able to eat 2 or 3 at a time, but try it. If the pouch does not like them, it will tell you. I do not know about the opti-fast free foods, sorry. You may be able to have SF jello and popsicles. Those are usually free on most restrictive diets. Good luck on the opti-fast and with surgery. Hugs Julie

I can eat fruit, now. I used to not could tolerate it. I cannot tolerate citrus, but I buy a mixed bowl of fruit about once or twice per week, and I eat pineapple, watermelon, honey dew, and grapes, and cantaloupe very well. Not much at a time, but it keeps me regular...yuck, but a good thing. If I eat too much watermelon, I can dump, but sometimes that is a good thing. Try little bits of fruit at a time, grapes were the easiest at first. I can also tolerate apples, but I don't eat the peel. Deb

I can eat all kinds of fruit. It doesn't make me dump. Actually, I haven't ever dumped, so I may not be a dumper. I haven't tried watermelon becasue it isn't allowed for Dr. Bours patients - supposedly until goal. You probably won't be able to eat 2 or 3 peaches at a time. Its PROTIEN first for us. I eat 1/2 a small nectarine with my 2 oz. of protien somtimes and that is plenty. Everything changes after surgery and the little bit of fruit you do get is satisfying. Free foods on optifast are SF jello, SF popsicles, pickles, cucumbers and celery. I don't believe you are allowed fruit. Kathy

Hey Rachel I have been eating with the "protein first" thinking. So before I even finish what I think that I can eat of my protein (tuna, chicken, hamburger, eggs, etc.), I am full and can't eat anymore. I had actually kind of shyed away from fruit, because I was afraid of the natural sugar in it. But, I just recently ate about 4 bites of cantelope and it was really good and sweet (definitely satisfied my sweet tooth), and I didn't dump (I'm 4 months out). I just have to take it slow. Hugs, Dianne

I am 9 months out from surgery and I can eat fruit. (I would warn you that the first 3-4 times I tried fruit, I was very ill.) I can't eat a lot of it, but it is SO GOOD! I have 2-3 strawberries with real whipped cream for "dessert" sometimes. I will warn you that fruit might send you to the ladies room. If I ever have trouble with going to the bathroom, I eat some watermelon. It doesn't make me dump, but it tends to... well you know. Throw some fresh frozen fruit in a blender with yougurt and ice (add some protein powder) and WOW, a WLS milkshake. Good luck!

Rachel I am 8 weeks out and I eat fruit everyday. I eat pineapple, bananas, apples, applesauce, peaches, pears, strawberries. I think that is all I have tried. I haven't had any problems with any of them!! Melissa

Thanks everyone for the great ideas. I love fruit and I hope that I can handle it.
