Sherry, I have been thinking about your some since we spoke the other night. MY daughter was never "overweight" but had a little belly, you know the one that sit ups and crunches don't help. She became a vegetarian a year ago and just from not eating meat and junk she went from a size 14 to an 8 without depriving herself and she takes lunch to school since they do not have a healthy menu. She also likes to fix her own food and mos tof it she can make on her George Forman grill. Maybe your son would like to do something like that! Kids are very cruel, my daughter is a special needs child so I have heard it all and it make me so angry and this parents think their child could never say such things but here we go right..... We do tend to influence our children with our insecurities when we think they are not even paying attention. I never liked to look in the mirror since I gained weight and thought Kayla never knew it and as I now know had noticed and because of kids being mean to her she thinks she is ugly and my heart aches for her because I know that pain! You hang in there and keep us posted , I have been there and done that so many times, if I can help please call me!!! Patti 234-5549

hey patti, i just got this. thanks for the encouragement. i am working with him. i just wish he wasn't such a hard nut to crack. he learned very early to just take stuff. he is not like me one bit. he is a carbon copy of his dad though. i know the pain your daughter feels too. it breaks my heart that children can't see themselves. she can't see what a beautiful person she is (inside and out). you hang in there too. my number is 228-7442 or 303-4197. and let me know when you get to the hospital. i know you won't be alone but your "new family" is here. sherry

Sherry, Sorry that I haven't responded yet. Be thankful that you have an 8 year old who does want to do something about his weight. You are doing the right thing with educating him on making healthy choices. And letting him know that skipping meals is not the answer. I believe with your encouragement, he will suceed. My son is 17 (almost 18), and at 8 years old, he didn't want any part of cutting back on anything. Sodas were the biggest culprit. And he continued to gain and gain. I wasn't much help with working all the time, and my parents catering to him all the time. It wasn't until I was researching surgery last year that he finally tried to cut back (he is over 6' tall and weighed more than me). I don't buy any sodas anymore, only water. He has lost some, but is still a big boy!! And believe it or not, still being a big boy and very shy, he has a very pretty (and slim) girlfriend. They started dating in March, went to the prom and are at the beach with his dad right now. So being overweight for him isn't the end of the world.....but I still try to remind him of healthier choices. I want him to live and not have to go through surgery later in his life. Hugs, Dianne
