Starting real food
Hey ladies! On May the 26th will be 4 weeks for me....
I am so invloved with the puree dieting, right now, that to think about moving to "real" food scares me and I am not sure just how to do it
Can anyone please help me with this? I am wanting to learn what to eat and what not to eat after my 4 weeks. I did go to the classes and received the booklet for gastric bypass surgery, but I did not find it full of information. SO, I worry about everything and I am already starting to worry about eatting "real" food. What have all yall done, after your 4 weeks. Are there things that I should stay away from? I would appreciate ANY advice
Thanks,
Chell

Hey Chell,
My best advice is to take one bite, chew it into oblivion, swallow, and then wait several minutes to be sure all is well before you take your next bite.
As for what to eat and what to avoid, I was told that the biggest problems come with the carbs- pasta, rice, breads. They suspect that is what caused me to go to the ER last Friday. They suspect that maybe the pasta noodles I ate were a little on the dry side and maybe did not digest well, and instead of waiting after one bite to see if all was fine, I just ate as if I had nothing to worry about. It is possible that it did not pass through the opening too well and backed up into my esophagus. (of course, I still have to follow up with a cardiologist because they are not convinced whether it was GI or angina)
I also found that the more moist the food, the easier it was too digest. I had trouble with chicken, until I mixed it with mayo for chicken salad, or had it diced up tiny in broth for soup. While I am not pureeing, I am cutting just about everything into tiny bite-size pieces, and chewing really well. Make sure your veggies are soft. I have not attempted raw veggies yet, or any of the harder fruits.
I wish I could be more helpful, but I am only a couple of steps ahead of you. Keep the protein shakes coming to keep your protein up, too!
Hugs!
Christine
My advise (and from the MUSC booklet) take a small bite and chew, chew, chew and then chew again. Wait about 5-10 minutes. If everything goes well, no pain or nausea, take another bite and chew, chew, chew. Take it slow and do not be in a rush. At any time you feel pain and/or nausea STOP and do not try that food again for about a week. Also start with some soft foods. My first food was scrambled eggs. My next was hamburgers. Do not move to raw veggies for another week or two after you start solid food. Remember PROTEIN FIRST then your veggies. I have done very well with ground beef. So I made a bunch of hamburgers and chili. Reheated chicken was too tough for me at first, now it is OK. I can have just about anything now. I wish you luck as your transition into the solid world.
