Question: Does anyone else's breastbone stick out since surgery? I had a hernia repair a year before my sleeve and then repaired again with my sleeve 3/2018 and then repaired again with my rny 7/2018. It's protruding out pretty far and I have still have problems swallowing so I was wondering if they might be related. Thank you ??

the bottom of my sternum sticks out. There's some name for that (which escapes me at the moment) - and I understand it's not all that uncommon among people who have lost massive amounts of weight. I don't have a swallowing problem, though. I think I remember reading that the breast bone protrusion is due to there being a lot of fat underneath it at one time, pushing it out a bit. I don't know if it would be related to your swallowing problem or not...

Greetings Cat,

It's unlikely your protruding sternum is related to your difficulty swelling. Have you had an upper GI exam or endoscopy?

Feel better.

I think you intended this for the original poster - I've never had swallowing issues.

that is perfectly normal. You just may not have ever been able to see/feel it before.

here's an old thread on what I was referring to - the xyphoid process sticking out. Mine sticks out as well. Is this what you were referring to?

Yup, xiphoid process. Being morbidly obese does some crazy things to our bodies. But some of these issues, like the xiphoid sticking out, are natural parts of weight loss. It will go away once your body adapts.

I think your swallowing issues are something else.
