after speaking with my dr again and being educated more about both procedures ( I've been tossing and turning and wrestling this decision) I have decided on rny. I will have it done Tuesday morning! I'm afraid and excited

Hi,

What was it that changed your decision?

He said that the sleeve is a wonderful surgery but it is considered a high pressure system and explained it like a long slender balloon ( like the kind you make balloon animals with) they are under pressure and with my reflux and having had the band around that portion of my stomach, it would not be the safest option for me. He says the risk of a leak would greatly be elevated. He also said that sometimes the band has created damage and the place that they usually make " virgin" sleevers staple line and he would have to go around that and it would make my pouch a slightly different shape than a normal sleeve and he did not believe I would be satisfied with my progress because of these things .

I am being re-sleeved this week... The doctor just insists that gastric bypass is not necessary for me because "I'm not that big".  He did say the risk of leaks is greater.... I'm hoping that I won't be one of the 5%?  The doctor has been doing sleeves for over 10 years and has only had 1 leak...

That is great statisticly. I'm sure you will be just fine. Good luck with your procedure. I have severe gerd that has led to ulceration which is another reason I wasn't a great candidate for the sleeve. I am considered a lightweight as well so I really was in the mind set that sleeve was less invasive and I didn't think I needed to be drastic as much as rny but realize that 72 lbs is a great enough reason to do this . Wishing you the best!

Why did you choose the RNY and not the mini bypass?

I'm curious because I also have a lap band and a plication. I found a doctor who was willing to unfold my plication and he said I could choose what I'd like to revise to and I'm having a hard time deciding. The mini bypass is supposed to have less risk because they only make one anastomosis, not two like with the rny...but... there is more risk of GERD and bile reflux with the mini.

I have suffered a lot with reflux so I needed to avoid anything with that as a possible complication . I discussed each option with my surgeon and we decided the rny was safest choice for me
