I had a realize band put in 3 years ago. I got down from my high of 320 to about 215. I am back up to about 240 right now. I work out several times a week but can eat anything I want as much as I want... without drinking with my meal. I am hungry all the time, I feel like a failure and think my biggest issue is why is this the one thing I always fail at?

I finally got a new Dr and on Monday he recommended I remove the band and had 3 choices, nothing (gain weight if I am like most), sleeve, or RNY. But I dont know what to do.  I dont want to gain anymore back, I would prefer to lose another 80 to 100. I am just scared of having surgery again and overwhelmed by which of the choices I should make.

Any ideas, suggestions, help?

The sleeve is a good option, as it is the first part of the DS.  The DS has the best long-term weight loss.  There are alot of people (me included) *****gain with the RNY, and then revise to the DS.

You can also take NSAIDS with the DS.  You can never take NSAIDS again with the RNY.  As I started getting older and being unable to take NSADIS, I ended up having to take time off of work and had to take pain pills for my hip flare up.  As I drove for my job.  And, with my RNY, I also developed reactive hypoglycemia, due to having a pouch with my RNY..... Having a pyloric valve with the sleeve is much healthier, as you keep more of your normal stomach anatomy.

Just a few points to ponder.....

I just had my crapband taken out and revised to the DS. You lost alot with the band....I lost approx. 22 lbs. My start weight was 240 and I am sitting at 215 right now and 3 weeks out....that is more weight I have ever, ever, ever lost with the band. I chose the DS due to the foods I can eat and there is no dumping and with studies showing that this surgery will help me keep off the weight for the rest of my life. Look into this site....check out the forums. Choose the right one for you......good luck!

Thank You. Due to family history of anemia and  degenerative bone disease I was told that the DS might be too much for my body in the long run when I looked into it before. Those two issues were actually the reasons I was talked into the band to begin with. I hope that helps with any recommendations.

Actually you'll probably have better luck with the DS with family history of anemia and degenerative bone disease since the RNY folks tend to have more iron deficiency than DSers AND you probably WILL need NSAIDS for the bone disease (inflamation and pain control) which you CANNOT take with RNY.

The sleeve is also a good option IF you feel you can lose the weight and keep it off without malabsorption.  Hopefully other DSers will chime in on this thread.

Who's your current surgeon? Does he or she actually DO the DS? Truly, anyone who can handle the RNY can handle the DS.

Than you should look into the sleeve.  Most people with the sleeve report the sleeve does what the band promised and didn't.  I had the band for 3.5 years and have now converted to the sleeve.  I'm three weeks out and down to my low with the band.  Also with the sleeve there is no malabsorption.  I'm sure you will need iron with what every WLS you chose.

Good Luck

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

In that case I would definately say go with the sleeve! With both the RNY and DS you malabsorb vitamins and minerals as well as calories. So you wou;ld do best with the sleeve, you still need to take a good muti vitamin and sometimes B complex and iron, but not nearly as much as with the other 2 surgeries. The sleeve works like the band was supposed to but didn't. I've seen hundreds of people who had the band revise to the sleeve and be very succesful. If the band helped you lose, the sleeve should also work very well. I wish you much luck and please don't feel like a failure because the band has not worked they way we were told it would for thousands of people! You didn't fail the band did and that is why the insurance is oking the revision!

I had VSG>DS, and when I had the VSG, I was told to lay off the NSAIDs, because continual use could lead to ulcers, and with the VSG there's not enough stomach to risk it.

Biscuit,

I think that depends on the surgeon.  You CAN take NSAIDS with a VSG and a DS.  No problem.
