Hi,

How did your surgery go? I'm curious to find out if you're feeling any restriction. I sure hope so.

Anita nobody has posted a positive response about this procedure long term, many short term either.  I have been on this forum for two years.

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

Hi charm_n_ladi,

I know it's been a long time since you posted. How was your outcome?

Did you have an open RNY? I had open RNY in November 2002. I kept 100lbs off for 10yrs. I started on an anxiety med and put on 40lbs in 3 months.

I went to a bariatric surgeon here in Texas and after 2 years of trying everything he did an EGD and found my stoma opening was larger than if I had done a laparoscopic RNY. He then said I was a perfect candidate for the Apollo Overstitch procedure.

Dr. Celio Burrowes in Atlanta, GA was my surgeon back then.

I appreciate any insight.

Thanks- Kelly S

Marie, I have to agree with others, this 'overstitch' procedure is a flavor of the month and I've never heard anything positive. When you were considering your revision, what was the reason for your weight gain?  Did your pouch stretch?  Did you have an enlarged stoma?  What? I know you said you had surgery originally in NYC (I did both of my original and revision here in NYC), di did you email him or her for his/her opinion?

I had an RNY in 2002, I lost 130lbs - going from 305 to 175. I regained to 250 and in June of 2011, I had a Band over Bypass (BOB). I've lost 70lbs, have more restriction than I ever did with the RNY and very happy with my procedure.

You need to have a chat with your surgeon.  I'd ask why you aren't feeling restriction - if you are supposed to.

Good Luck - Heather

Thanks Heather! I lost 110lbs. after my RNY in 2002. I've gained back 40 lbs. I am now 164 and 5 feet tall. I attribute the weight gain to having three children post- op. My first daughter was at the three years post-op (2005), another in (2007), and the last in 2009. I had one child pre-op i***** After four kids I had a tubal ligation and the Novasure procedure. I have not been able to lose 1 pound since then. I was successful for keeping the weight off for many years.

Did you have an open RNY in 2002? I did and my surgeon here in NC indicated he would not recommend BOB or any laparoscopic surgery due to scar tissue in the abdomen. I need my gallbladder out still and another surgeon wants to do it open versus laporascopically. Just don't want to be cut open. I had a terrible, nasty wound infection and pneumonia after my RNY. My surgeon in NY (Dr. Leitman) is no longer at Lenox Hill and he's no longer in Bariatrics. He works at another hospital in an administrative role (Board of Surgery I think).

I did chat with my surgeon and he said to wait until the 4-6 week period to evaluate the outcome. He will scope me at that time if no restriction and we'll take it from there. He said we have not burned any bridges yet. I work in healthcare and at the hospital where the surgery was done. I'm looking into any options that way as well.

Thanks again for your support.

Marie, I used Dr, Leitman too, August 2002.  While I love Dr. Leitman with all my heart, he had a trenchancy to make the pouches very large - hence the regain.  He is at Beth Isreal now, head of surgery.  When he first moved, he was still doing surgery but since he never learned "lap" he was kind of left out.  I emailed him initially and I ended up seeing Roslin at Lenox and Kurian at NYU.  Roslin wanted me to do a ful on revision of my RNY but it was major surgery and the complication rate was very high.  He advised against DS bc of my open RNY plus I didn't have a lot of weight to lose. I then went to see Kurian over at NYU, she suggested both the RNY revision and the BOB. I wanted the BOB as I has heard of many success stories plus, my stoma was still intact and I had a very large pouch, it seemed right for me and I was a volume eater.  I had the BOB done June 2012, went from 250 to 170 - I love it. I have restriction, I cannot eat a lot and it gives me back control.

I wish you the best and I hope it works for you.  I just know if you don't have restriction that you are seeking you will be continuously fighting a losing batte - I know I was.

Heather,

I went for a second opinion today. This surgeon suggested putting a band over the bypass. It's not a lap band. It looks like a small rubber band. Is that what you had done? Also, were you able or did you even try to get your records from Dr. Leitman? Thanks so much!
