Maryjo,

Caryn

I had one band for 8 years, it slipped up and was wrapped around esophagus.  That one came out in Feb of this year and replaced with another lapband which was damaging the esophagus and having no weight loss.  Decided to finally do the RNY end of August and like Peggy said my only regret is that I did not do this 9 years ago when i had my first band put in.

I completely understand...I think the damage that the band can do, via slippage or erosion is very scary. I mean, I know that there is damage and risks with any procedure...but in the long run, I do now wish I had done the Rny first.  I am 5 years post op...and I have been having issues.

Someone in the chat told me, they were surprised that i was having erosion issues only being 5 years out...i don't think they have done their research, as erosion can start just days after placement.  I know a woman who had her band for 3 months, and it had already eroded into her stoma. It really just depends on the method of placement, and flapping of the stomach lining to hold it in place.

Revision on 09/08/09 with
MaryJo and I always respond together to inquiries about band to RNY revisions  :)
I had my revision a few weeks after her, and it was the best thing I did.  I had my band for 2 years, lost very minimal weight, and then started having problems with vomiting and too much restriction despite being completely unfilled.  After 4 barium swallows it was decided the band had slipped, and needed to come out.  I was offered the choice of remove the band and do nothing more, replace the band, or do a revision.  After a lot of soul searching, I chose the RNY, and already I've lost more weight than I did during the whole 2 years with the band!!!
The surgery for the revision was also 10 times better than the band surgery....dont know why...but I had literally no pain.
My only regret is that I did the band in the first place.... definitely should have gone the rny route from the get go.    Good luck to you..you will be very pleased with the results!!

Congrats!!! I'll be right along with you Dec. 29th. For anyone that has had this done. I bounced back after the lap-band. Was back to work in 1 week, but probably could have gone back a day or two earlier.
I'm having my surgery on Dec. 29th and need to start back at school on Jan. 9th. Is this crazy? I only go 3 days a week, 5 hours a day, and I know I'll probably be more tired than normal.....Any info would be appreciated....!

I think if you have it done laparascopically you will be fine.  Probably a bit tired by for 5 hours 3x a week you will be okay.  All the best.   What a great way to start the new year!  2010 will be your year.  maryjo
