diverticulum found in pouch

Hi all, new here to the board but have been with OH for years.  I will be four years out from RNY july 28th.  The past 1 1/2 months I have been having severe abdominal pain with I eat, constant nausea (eating or not).  I had an upper GI which showed a diverticulum outpouch in my pouch.  Doc called me yesterday and said the we are looking as surgery.  He has only seent his happen twice,  (once so happened to be a close friend of mine but her's was a bit worse that mine is so far.)  They concidered her's as a revision, something to do with either the duodenal or jujenol (sp?).  What they found is a portion of my pouch "hanging".  They are doing an endoscopy tomorrow to check for uclers (which he would treat first before surgery, though none showed up on the Upper GI)  and then we would talk about surgery which would consist of going in lap and "trimming" the pouch as he put it.  My question is has anyone heard of this?  and what is the outcome?  Thanks  Keri 7/28/04 RNY 5/1/05 Emergency surgery for internal henia and obstruction at 5 weeks preggo with twins 10/30/05 c-section for twins 7/25/07 gallbladder removal Awaiting surgery to fix pouch

I also had a RNY (in 1997), lost 100 lbs. and gained back 40. Then I had the StomaphyX, which did not work. Finally, I did lots of research and chose a revision to a DS. Just do lots of research on all the various options out there; you want the next surgery to be your last!
RNY (1997) at 338 lbs.;revision (2001); Failed StompahyX in 2007; DS (2008) at 268 lbs.

oh wow, i will keep you in my prayers too.  i haven't gained anythng, instead i lost since i can't eat at all.  when I do, i just throw it back up.  not complaining about the weight loss, just not a good way to do it.  i had an internal hernia which caused a bowel obstruction back in 2005, so I know the pain and discomfort that they can cause,  though that case is rare.  I don't know how large my pouch is either, nor how much intesting they bypassed during original surgery.  I wonder if he will have to bypass anymore when he goes in to fix this problem.  I guess it depends on what side the outpouch is on.  Hopefully they figure out your stuff soon and take care of it.  I can't wait for my surery, then hopefully I can eat again.  Of course it means going back to liquids and soft foods like the original surgery, but i'll deal, better than not eating anything like now.

I HAVE EXACTLY THE SAME !!! I am waiting for a revision ,and my barium swallow showed a diverticulum in the pouch . I had a period of nausea for 3 months ,hardly eat  ( DID NOT LOSE A POUND IN WEIGHT THOUGH ? )  I also have a hiatus hernia, and every time I eat I get terrible discomfort  and have to undo my bra,and ease my trousers to get relief ! But my surgeons now want me to go on a diet to see if I can lose weight, Lord knows when my revision will take place I am hoping at some point this year .I lost weight for 6 mths after surgery  and then came to a complete standstill ,am now 232lbs . I have not gained weight but am maintaining at the moment ! Sue

If your still having the nausea and barely able to eat, i would fight for the revision.  My doc is waiting for the endoscopy tomorrow and then going to go over the game plan for the surgery.  I hope to god he does it soon.  I can't eat anything at all without being in pain, if it doesn't come back up to begin with.  I have no appetite to even eat but now I am sooo exhausted, (i guess from not eating) that it is affecting my daily life even more.  I have two two year olds to take care of plus I babysit another two year old and three month old.  I'm lucky if I make it to 8pm before I pass out from exhaustion.  I can afford to lose the weight so I won't complain about that  but it isn't a healthy way to lose it.   I'm just glad he figured out what it is instead of passing it off as an ulcer like they were a few months ago before it got bad.  keep me updated!   Keri

Today was the endoscopy.  Everything was normal except for the diverticulum outpouch in my pouch.  No ulcers or anything else.  My GBS doc came in prior to me going "under" and said that I am looking at a revision but he just wanted this done to make sure there is nothing else in there that could be causing some problems and so he knew if anything else needed fixing when he goes in.  So he is to call me sometime this week to go over the game plan for the revision surgery.  hopefully all goes smoothly and insurance doesn't give any issues since this is a revision due to a medical complication.  Hopefully it is soon cause I really can't stand this constant nausea.  I didn't even have that when I was preggo with my twins.

Hello Keri!  I to have the "jejunal diverticulum" or second stomach as some call it.  The hanging pouch from where the small intestine was disconnected.  I will be having a revision on 7-23-08 and will also have the distal stomach removed as well.  (My surgeon, Dr. alexander in Dallas, said that they have had 2 patients that had a full rny and that their distal stomach had developed some sort of cancer so all the revisions that they are performing they are just removing the distal stomach as a preventative) I had an open rny w/ gall bladder removal in 2002.  I cannot find anything on this topic.  I have tried to google this and it really doesnt tell me anything.  Please let me know if you have any more info on this and I will share with you what i find.

Hello, I just came across this thread and am having the same issues.  I was wondering what your out come was.  I had lap rny December 2005, hiatal hernia repair June 2010.  I had an edoscopy last week , they told me there were diverticulum near staples and a hiatal hernia.  Rny doc called and wanted me to have an upper gi series done.  Well this morning I had the upper gi today the radiologist said he sees a diverticulum and a "folded pouch" but didn't see anything that he is concerned about. And no evidence of a hiatial hernia.  So now I am waiting to hear from my rny doc to give me his take on the test.   I am really starting to feel likes nut case.

oh wow, i haven't heard anyone getting cancer in the distal stomach at least he hasn't said anything to me.  I am still waiting for the doc's phone call for the surgery info.  how long did it take from being diagnosed and your date for surgery?  I hope he doesn't wait too long, however it probably will be since my original doc moved Conneticut and Dr. gagne and another doctor had to take over my old doc's cases.  The ones that had issues in the past all went to my doctor now cause he is the director of the bariatric center for the hospital. If i was assigned to the other doctor, i still wouldn't know what is going on since that doc doesn't like to do much of anything.  I too am having a very hard time finding anything on this.  My doctor has only seen this twice before, once so happened to be one of my best friends.  He did say it is like a 1% chance of this happening in all forms of GBS.  I am apparently an odd ball since my internal hernia and bowel obstruction back in 05 (while I was pragnant no less) was also the same ratio.  As soon as I can get more information I will also let you know.  did your doc say anything about HOW this can happen?  Is it something we did wrong or just can happen?
