Hi- I have a question regarding the GI Series my surgeon has sent me for - I called out pt services today to make me appt and now when I asked the nurse regarding the results and questions regarding about the measurements she told me "I dont think the dr has put the correct code-  when the asked for the diag code - my dr has coded the diag as acid reflux/gerd- so I told her that I was a RNY pt and that I needed to get this information - she said I should call my dr back- no need coming and paying a copay for something that isn't right- now I am upset - is this normal for thr DR to put this dx code to get mesurements of pouch and stoma????? I work in a radiology dept. , in our department it depends on what the dept. head call for regardless of what the referring physician has ordered. Most of our physicians have little or no experience with Bariatric Pt's therefor they usually miscode orders or refferals. We review them for proper protocol, UGI can be the same for a RNY pt as for an avg pt. Ask for your procedure "UGI" to be protocolled by a Radiologist making sure the order states RNY Pt. Protocol also must state Dx msmt.

I had the same thing listed (GERD) as the diagnosis for my pre-op test (esphogeal manometry). When I questioned the Dr about it, because I have never had this, his reasoning was that he had to list a diagnosis in order for the insurance to cover the test. It was listed, yes, but not because I acutally had it, since it was my initial consult to them, but to rule out that I had it. Hope that helps :)

Are you seeking a revision??? Just asking - because I am actually in the process of looking in to the StomaphX procedure and my doctor put the same thing on my paper for my UGI.  My understanding is that because this procedure is so new, as an attempt to get it covered by insurance companies - your doctor has to show that you are experiencing issues such as GERD, acid reflux, etc.
