So Frustrated!!!

I have been extremly frustrated by this whole thing.  RNY in August 2002.  Started at 446lbs. In a year I went down to 297lbs.  I am now up to 377lbs.  I feel horrible.  The dr that did my surgery, Dr. Glen Strickland of Columbia will not discuss any surgical options.  He wants me to see a Bariatric doctor for pills and a dietician.  Other surgeons in the upstate of SC won't even talk to you if you have had surgery.  I had fought then given up.  Then I go to the OBGYN today.  I have seen this doctor for about three years.  She asked me about my weight and to see if I had ever considered gastric bypass.  Duh!  Like this hasn't been mentioned about the failure during every visit.  She asked about having it again. Told her no doctor would talk to me in upstate or columba sc.  Then she proceeded to tell me to check out Duke University's inpatient program where you stay weeks and weeks.  I just don't know what to do now.  I really feel like a failure and like I will be like this for the rest of my life.

Peach:

Try researching the duodenal switch (DS).  You can find more information and ask questions on the DS board here:

If I were you, I'd make a phone call to Dr. Husted.  He is a specialist on revisions and that's just about all he does (revisions on failed RNY's and lapbands)

He did my revision in Aug 06, and even though I was a lightweight, I just lost 100 lbs in 8 months and expect to be at goal within a few months.  He's an expert and one of the top DS surgeons in the world.  He's been featured on Discovery Health for several patient stories, and has operated on really large, difficult cases.  One was a 700 lb 17 year old boy.

Good luck.

Im frustrated too. I gasined 80 pounds back, had the repair which didnt take, twice! I want them to do the surgery over as it has been discovered that they didnt seperate my stomach(es) and that is part of the problem. But i am having a problem finding a surgeon to do so. They all dont want to go against what their partner has said. I am getting depressed dealing with this, i have had so many medical problems caused by this surgery and dont even have the benefit of it to atleast say " well atleast i lost the weight".   I want to find a new surgeon myself, that can do the repair not edescopically ( sorry for the bad spelling.)

Hi there! My name is Tiffany and I am from Garden Grove, Ca. I had gastric bypass on August 9, 2004. I weighed 316 and i am only down to 220. Seems to me that something is wrong. I can sometimes eat a lot and sometimes eat very little. It just depends on what I am eating. I feel your pain and fristration on this because I feel I have messed up my surgery as well.  I heard of people going in for a revision. Have you ever heard of that? I was thinking about asking my dr if I could do it. But, she is pretty quick to say no to things.  My walking doesn't even help me. I have even taking on drinking because of the frustrations. Sad to say & a very poor excuse on my part to use that as a "reason" to drink.  But you know, I have been heavy all of my life and to finally get this surgery and for it not to work, it is like, is there something wrong with me, did I do something wrong?  I am glad to see that I am not alone in this frustration. Please keep your chin up.  Tiffany

I had a revision from RNY to DS, but my pouch was left alone. Just increased the malabsorption. I have lost 61lbs in 8 months, not a speedy thing, but am still losing at about 1lb a week. This was a low risk/high benefit ration way to get the revision. I went to Brazil, so didn't have the pesky problems with having to follow a diet, ask permission of anybody. (I did lose 65lbs in the two years before, just couldn't keep it all off). I paid about $11,000 plus travel expenses. This in 1/3 of cost here.
