Not losing weight

Hi. I'm new to the community. I just had gastric bypass surgery 18 days ago. I am already frustrated as I have only lost 12 pounds. Seems really low as I have been monitoring my calories and they have ranged from 500-700 calories a day. Mostly from protein shakes or isopure protein drink. I've just started the soft food diet a few days ago with egg whites, and puréed food. I've been accurately logging on my fitness pal.
Any ideas or suggestions on what I might be doing wrong. I am active but won't start back to an extremely physical job until the 27th. (In 3 days).

Thank you for any feedback.

You're doing nothing wrong. Everyone's Journy is different. Do not compare yourself too other. Only suggestion is to add some walking. Just a nice walk at a pace that is not strenuous and do not overdo it. Be patient.

Thank you. Sometimes I forget to give myself some grace.

How much were you expecting to lose in 18 days?

When you have surgery, most of us gain wait from all the fluids and then start losing. Did you lose before your surgery? Pre op loss can slow down the initial loss as well.

Make sure your expectations are reasonable and keep doing all the things you are doing, including walking, and you will see it. This is the time to do all the things to get your head in the right place to develop good routines for the long term success you will have!

Finally, google 3 week stall, it's not always precisely at 3 weeks and for some of us, it's intermittent but knowing to expect it will help with the mind tricks we play on ourself.

Good luck! You've taken the first big step and you've got this!

Ugh.... I don't know. But more than that considering the lack of calories. And, I have been active with walking and light weights at the gym. I do have to keep the mind tricks at bay.
Thank you for your response.

Everyone is different but there really is an average that can be expected. It breaks down like this:

Month 1 - 20 pounds
Month 2, 3, 4, and 5 - 10 pounds a month

Month 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 - 5 pounds a month

100 pounds lost after one year. There is also a bounce-back period that normally happens after about 24-30 months. That is normally a 20 pound regain.

You are in the honeymoon phase of surgery where weight loss is easy. As time goes on your body heals and it realizes that it has been starved. It will try to gain that weight back. Use this time to work on really good habits that will help you as the journey gets harder.

Your appetite will come back and you will be able to eat more. You body will learn how to absorb food again. Right now you are losing exactly what is expected. Activity makes it easier but it is the calories in that really matter long term as far as what you will weigh.

Real life begins where your comfort zone ends

Ooof. My honeymoon is off to a bad start. I think I have to get it in my mind to trust the process and not have unrealistic expectation. Thank you for the breakdown. I had not seen that before.

Welcome!

There are so many variables here. If you started with a lower body weight in the schemeof things, you generally won't lose as fast. Same if you may have lost a lot leading into surgery as someone else said.

I lost 12 pounds my first month. Follow your plan. Heal. Give it time. We all lose at different rates!

Glad it sounds like you made it through surgery okay! Best wishes.

except for those who are the size of someone on "My 600 lb Life", it seems like most of us lose somewhere in the 15-25 lb range the first month. Since you've lost 12 lbs in 18 days, you'll be in that range. You are doing nothing wrong.

keep in mind, too, that there are many factors that control your rate of weight loss, most of which you have little to no control over. For example, gender, age, metabolic rate, percentage of your weight that is mucle, starting BMI. The two things you DO have control over are how closely you stick to your program, and how active you are. Do well with those and you'll lose the weight, whether fast or slow. In the end, your success is due to how compliant you are - not your rate of weight loss. I was behind the curve my entire journey, and I ended up losing over 200 lbs.
