Food getting stuck (RNY specific question)
on 2/18/23 1:42 am
Hey all! I'm about to move to soft food and beyond and I'm interested to get some experiences on the 'food getting stuck' thing.
I will do my very best to avoid it but my questions are;
a) did you find most of the time It found it's way through?
b) what helped you?
c) does it go away? Ie after a year or whatever, you stopped having to worry so much?
Thanks in advance for sharing your experience.
Sometimes it stopped and went through, a few times it came back up.
It shouldn't happen with truly soft foods. I don't know what's specifically on your plan, but soft foods shouldn't be able to get stuck, by the time you've finished chewing.
It gets easier over time. You can eat more solid things, and chew a little less. Some things are still more difficult than they were before surgery, and I'm glad they are. Bread can fill me up really fast, to the point I get very uncomfortable. Fries as well. I can eat a few, but if I pu**** too far, I regret it. For some strange reason I can eat more steak than French fries.

For me fries can still give me a horrible RH, but volume wise - I could eat them.
Rice - nope, no go. It sits like a rock, as if my pouch is not sure what to do with it.

What does RH mean? (I'm sure I am just being dumb)
RH is reactive hypoglycemia.
It's caused by toomany sugars or simple carbs being invested, causing rapid increase in blood sugar, then too much insulin is released causing low blood sugar- it reactive because it's a reaction to consuming food that stimulate insulin response.
Sugars, simple carbs can cause that, but also protein can cause that- i.e. lean whey protein shakes, egg white shakes, etc.
Typically eating simple sugar can cause dumping (everyone is different), then there is a delayed dumping- aka RH.
I used to have early dumping when injesting more than 7-8 gr of sugary drinks, or sweets. After15 years - I seldom dump, but still can get a severe RH. Potatoes, fries, sweet fruits (i.e grapes, banana, pineapple, melons, etc.) Can cause in my severe RH. But I also can get RH if I drink whey isolate protein shake, or shake made with egg whites powder.
To see what food cause insulin response- Google food insulin index. But having mind not everyone dumps, not everyone get RH, and even if they do, it can be very mild.

You poor thing. I am hoping to avoid the worst but who knows.
Thank you so much for the detailed information. Much appreciated.
Assume you dump. Don't test the waters, AKA eat sweets to see if you get a reaction. The worst dumping i get from sugar in liquid. I get severe dumping, followed by RH, 30-80 min later. That's why I never order diet drinks in restaurants, unless I get the bottle or a can, I don't drink any specialty coffee from Starbucks because I don't trust they would put SF syrup in case of regular syrup.. (yes, unfortunately I learned that the hard way). And so on. I also can dump having any SA - sugar alcohols -that some people can have, but not me. Some "so called fiber" - sweet fiber that some companies add to the drinks, or protein bars - the would trigger me also. That's part of RNY I wanted, to dump. But... I did not know what I was thinking.
In a way it's good because I don't drink lattes, or soft drinks, and I really have to be selective when picking protein bars. Its very easy to overeat on protein bars. They are like glorified candy bars.
Not sure is Australia is as bad as USA - but companies in USA put so many claims on the "manufactured foods" just so people buy them, and get hoked on them.
Just relax, have fun and eat clean food. We got fat in a first place because there was something wrong with our metabolism, and our ability to eat some foods in moderation.

If I had food stuck in my pouch, only bringing it back helped me. Sometimes I would drink warm water to be able to being back whatever was stuck.
For a very long time I couldn't tolerate raw carrots. More than a slice, and no matter if chewed to mash, chopped, etc, it always got stuck. It tookme a few years to be able to tolerate raw carrots. But I very seldom had issues with any type of meat, no matter if I was dry chicken breast, pork loin, or beef. But to this day (almost 15 years) I can't digest microwaved chicken. - chicken reheated in a microwave is a no-go.

I'll keep the warm water trick in the back of my head!
How strange that carrots were your kryptonite! Our bodies are weird and wonderful aren't they!
