Anyone 10 yr post op out there?

Yes me also I wonder if I traded one for the other. My husband used to be very heavy and now with his diabetes meds and exercise he has loss so much weight. wondering if I could have done the same thing without the surgery. I get so sick when I eat the wrong thing or over do the sugar. Ouch that hurts. What is done is done...and I thought this surgery was the best time for me and I did the research for about 3 years before I had surgery. Lol

We all have our own journey to take.. you researched it, you made the decision and it is hard.. but you did it!!

To me.... those "ouch days" when we eat the wrong thing,(it happens... we are only human) are the days that help me remember why I chose the surgery in the first place... if I didn't have those ouch days, I could only imagine where my health and the scale would be! Sure my taste buds have changed for the healthier... but I still long for the comfort foods that brought me to that awful place...I DO NOT want to go back there!!

Your husband has done well on his journey, and you are doing well on YOURS!

I'm somewhere around that mark as well - CK and I started out about the same time ... and she's done amazingly well.

I too had type 2 Diabetes going in and a very sluggish metabolism. I lost around 100 lbs initially of which I've kept ninety or so off . Other than some irritating loose skin issues ( not severe but I'd love to rectify them and really perfect my body as much as it's possible ) ... I've really enjoyed abundant health and even higher than average energy most days .

Putting on the " Covid thirty " though was no joke - and hormonal changes and a doctors instructions to sit on my butt for months didn't help things a bit . As soon as I got out and started working Thank God that weight came off .

I eat a basically sugar free low fat diet and try to move regularly .


I am not nearly as rigid about my diet as I was pre surgery because I still ( luckily) have a lot of restriction and malabsorption- honestly nothings really changed since just after post op . And interestingly I asked for a proximal .... so basically mini RNY and a larger pouch because I wanted to keep eating salads and lots of fresh homegrown veggies .

I have always been very skeptical about dieting in any way - I had a few yo-yo experiences as a youngster and was NOT pleased with being even bigger than before the diet when I finally started eating normally.

The support here on the website is amazing . Many of us regularly post our menus and our exercise. ((())) hugs

Go back to your eating plan.. high protein /low carb. Your tool has not changed.IT still works.

My Dr gave me 90 Gr. protein and no more than 50 per day carb limits. the first 3 days are most difficult. if you have not been diligent re: vitamins make sure you take your B complex set..I use sublingual since many B vitamins are destroyed n the acids from stomach/. those with low carbs for 3 days break my cravings. I also boost my protein up to 110 grams for a few days as i begin a crackdown on any bad habits...

Hang n there don't give up,. You are worth it!

I'm 10.25 years out and still doing well. Small fluctuations up and down weight wise, but no health issues associated with WLS. No health issues at all other that way too many trips to the ER to get stitched up from DIY projects at home. LOL. I turned 53 in July.

DIY can be dangerous!! Be careful!!

I am just shy of 50 (quickly approaching it in April!)

and I have more energy than I did at 25... losing 180lbs can sure help with that!

I am glad to hear you are ailment free JerseyJim!. Any dietary issues?

Thanks! I have what I would call typical dietary issues. If I eat to fast I get sick (and sometimes sneeze uncontrollably). Sugar kills me in so many ways, but it has to be a substantial amount of it. One bite of birthday cake, etc. does just fine. Carb coma is a real thing to me. If my meal is a little to heavy on carbs, I crash and need to sleep. 10+ years and I've gotten food stuck about a 6 or 7 times. Usually meat, and usually because I'm distracted and not paying attention to chewing thoroughly. There is no worse feeling in the world.

I will celebrate my 25th anniversary of WLS on Oct 31st.

The problems with brain body connection are common. There are somethings you can do to improve this. You need a full length mirror, a colored bar of soap, (a temporary marker or similar(possibly red-as in a mental cue this is not what your are anymore)... , so you can mark on the mirror and it be visible. outline a pair of your old pants, or another pair that are close to the size you were.

stand in front of the mirror and with a new color marker, i prefer blue or black they make a better contrast and "transfer better. to mind, connection" ..with the new color trace your approximate out- line NOW,, after you have traced that one take your fingers both hand, index fingers and trace the part of your body you are having trouble with. do this on a regular basis.. you must imprint the changes on YOUR mind..

I started out with hypothyoidism , i have boosted my iodine intake...and have been prediabetic for 4o years... well before surgery.( i currently take bitter melon for it.) You need to make sure your are utilizing your minerals right.. as a result of mineral loss i had osteopenia dx 7 years post op.( i changed forms of calcium, added Magnesium, and K2 when i learned it's role.), and have lost almost all my teeth.they cracked and were not salvageable.

Vitamin K2 is a mineral mover in the body, to get enough one would need to consume 30 lbs of broccoli a day.- so i take one of the two forms available..D3, Zinc, Iodine, Copper( 200% of RDA- mine had dropped and i was breaking blood vessels in hands from picking up a one lb weight.) Magnesium, a dessicated liver compound for anemia.

Before surgery i was making my pants- in a 30w with a special insert in waist a back in the patterns so my pants did not show more than i desired.... had bum knees, arthritis, blood sugars routinely were below 45 on a tight diet of string beans and chicken or tuna...I lost 45 lbs before surgery and 60lbs in 3 mo. immediately post op.i was working 16 hour shifts on my feet 4x a week. and could hardly tie my own shoes.

That is no longer the case. i have been at or within 20-30 lbs of goal since 2nd year post op... stresses i could not control changed my metabolism and hormones, when those stressors were relieved i lost 20 lbs without any diet change or effort.

Stay the course! work on issues you have trouble with,... and celebrate your gains in ability, in function and life!
