What's on your Wednesday Menu, RNYers?
Mornin' All!
I am itching to get out of the house, but we had a snow/freezing rain mix this morning and they say some of the residential streets could be hazardous. Hopefully it will warm up enough today to melt any ice off the streets. I hate being trapped in my house!
QOTD: this is sort of crazy in a different sort of way. This was back when I worked in IT for one of the state agencies. We had some all-day meeting about migrating to a new email system on Sept 11, 2001. The meeting started around 8:00 am, right after the first plane hit. At that point, no one really knew what was going on - it was still thought that it might have been a tragic accident. So the meeting started. An hour or so into the meeting, some big shot state official (lieutenant governor or something) came on over the loud speaker and said there "appears to be a terrorist attack in progress in NYC and Washington DC" and that "all state office buildings are therefore on lockdown effective immediately". No other explanation. And of course, we were stuck in this conference room and couldn't get to our desks to check the news to see what the hell was going on (this was in the days before people brought their laptops to meetings). Of course, after that, pretty much no one was paying a lick of attention to the meeting, but my supervisor REFUSED TO CANCEL THE MEETING! So we went on, with hardly anyone paying attention, until noon, when we broke for lunch. Everyone raced back to their cubes to check the news, but you couldn't get through to ANY news Web site. Our non-IT colleagues filled us in on what was going on - and then we went back to the conference room and spent all afternoon there, again, with pretty much no one paying any attention. Why in the heck she didn't postpone the meeting since everyone was pretty much flipping out and paying no attention to the discussion about email migration, I haven't a clue.. I still marvel at that 17 years later. What was she thinking??? Was the email migration that important that it couldn't be postponed for a day or two? Sheesh.
accountability was great yesterday!

Good Morning JB and Menuers,
JB - your day sounds absolutely nuts! I do hope today is a better one for you.
We made the decision to put Chico down. We go for the appointment today at 3:30. My heart is breaking as I type this. I am in school, watching the children finish up a math assignment trying not to cry.
QOTD: I am an elementary school teacher. I have had kids pee their pants, poop their pants, puke in the classroom, puke on me, and even strip down and run around naked. (The last one happened on Monday.) Thank goodness for a good administration! Nothing much surprises me these days.
M1: coffee
M2: PP chocolate shake
M3: leftover chicken chili from dinner last night
M4: apple - if I feel like it
M5: breakfast - if we even feel like eating.
Being sad really makes me lose my appetite these days.
Have a warm Wednesday (I'm so cold.)

QOTD- I definitely can't top you JB. But I worked for the telephone company and we were trying to free up some conduits between manholes by cutting the old toll cables that were not supposed to be working. Well my coworkers thought they heard tone on this cable and the used a cable saw, basically a hacksaw and the cable died a slow painful death. Unfortunately that was not the right cable, it was the interoffice trunks between the switches. Guess what happens when the equivalent of half an central office goes off hook (tries to get dial tone) at the same time? The office dies. So this was pre cell phones and we only had pagers so our support team kept paging us and we couldn't respond because the switch was dead.
So I ended up working 25 hours straight. I was set up in a manhole right outside of a bar. So at closing time everyone wanders out and wants to know what is going on. I was in the middle manhole talking with people on both sides and trying to send tone so we could identify the pairs, it was a nightmare. Sending tone both directions and trying to hear what people are saying, imagine a noisy party line, but trust me none of us were having any fun.
The most beautiful one was we had another cable that was wet and we also work round the clock, and we were in a big tent. While we were working it was dark I looked out and it had started snowing and the snow with the lights looked like a Christmas card, it was quiet and white and beautiful.
Funny thing with as cold and wet as it was working as a cable splicer, it is still my favorite job. I'm now an engineer and it's definitely not as much fun or satisfying, but it is warmer.
I went off the rails last night, went to Costco and ended up with Rice Crispy Treats following me home. Not sure how that happened, but I managed to eat 2 last night...Today is a potluck at work, which I am not participating in, and will try to stick to my plan.
Have a great hump day everyone!
