A question about dental issues following GS
Thank you for your helpful reply! I had to search medical databases through my university's library but did find45 research studies and literature teviewd addressing dental issues sern in bariatric patients. That's what sent me to these website forums, hoping to hear real-world stories of incidence and how they were handled, preventative steps, etc. I have received such kind and supportive responses from so many folks that I truly appreciate. But it's still confusing to me why some websites are simply loaded with posts about dental issues while others have nary a word. I've always had pretty healthy teeth, but have family members who have suffered so much with severe dental problems that knowing all they went through (through no fault of their own) scares me a lot. At least now I have a lot of questions to ask my dentist and the surgeon when I eventually meet him. Thanks again!
Justme1960,
I had a WLS, that is no longer performed...It was called a Memphis by-pass i*****by my Surgeon, a surgical professor. It included an RNY, witht he pouch that is done now, banding above and below the pouch( different sized bands) the old stomach was left intact and enzymes utilized to begin digestion well into the alimentary canal.. I have 10 ft of small intestine that digests and 2 feet of colon.so much of both was removed( large intestine) or re utilized.( small intestine). I also have a stoma placed in my old stomach should i become incapacitated due to illness or accident, it can be easily accessed for feeding without major surgery.
Because I had such a complex procedure, All of the symptoms you have listed I have had at some point- plus some you did not name., in the past 2 decades. Each one of these is able to be addressed without medications, natural solutions are available for every one of them.Morbid obesity (MO) surgeries do change the way our bodies work. Without them is a 95% diet fail rate. With them you have a tool that has the capacity to extend your life and health to active. The surgeon will give ou the tool and you must use it properly and carefully. This is NOT an easy solution. It is a responsible one.
Without the surgery this 59 year old would probably already be in a nursing home not as a caretaker but as needing care. WLS literally gave me a new lease on life. We just have to decide if we wish to live for the future, or "push up daisies" early.
The one this question is about... is dental care, but it is really a larger question about the absorbtion and utilization of minerals. I used what my Dr ordered, and further information has come out- that. form is not easily used.. so now have swapped to different forms.. I have also been watching the information on utilization of magnesium and calcium and have added K2 to my regimine. early research shows it moves minerals from the arteries and vessels to the bone and the teeth. So this side effect of loss teeth and bone mass is PREVENTABLE.
after most of weight loss is complete-gastric enzymes will stop the gas, will also reduce the weight loss, so minimal use should be used until weight loss is near completion.. I use meat tenderizer with bromelin...it works well ,am still within 15 lbs of my origonal goal.
What I want you to remember is: the side effects of Obesity is proven to kill. The side effects of surgery can be mitigated.
Be sure to research each weight loss surgery and specifics about side effects from each one...note any side effects, that may affect you later. Pain will rduce with increased weight in many cases.. My knee, back, sinus issues reduced after the first 60-80 lbs.
