Can't gain weight
You are absolutely right, I do not drink when I eat, before or after. Fills me up n can't eat. So that advice was wrong in many ways. When I was heavy I had a hard time losing, now I'm to thin n can't gain. My highest weight I got to was127. I'd like to get to 135-140. Never thought this would happen I was scared I'd gain my weight back NOT! I do get my protein n lots of carbs. Hank you for your post.
If drinking fills up your pouch, you may have a constriction or stricture at the exit of your stoma. The RNY pouch doesn't have a valve so liquids can pass through the stomach quickly - which is why we normally NEVER want to drink 30 minutes before, during or after a meal. Even a calorie free liquid will cause issues because it empties out your pouch letting you put more food into it.
If water if filling you up and you can't eat after you drink - I'd say there's a fairly good chance you just identified why you aren't ABLE to gain weight. If you pouch isn't emptying normally you are likely taking in minimal calories.
Definitely check with your surgeon.
There are also a few serious medical conditions that can result in unexplained weight loss so going to your doctor for a discussion is a good idea regardless!

The OP had RNY surgery and you are recommending she drink with meals???? You are aware that drinking with meals after RNY is the number one reason people have stretched stomas...right? A stretched stoma means that anything you eat falls directly into the intestines and you will never again feel restriction. You will have ruined your surgery and there are very few successful fixes for a stretched stoma.
WORST ADVICE..... EVER!
OP.. you might want to add healthy fats, like peanut butter. They are very high in calories for a small amount of food.
Please provide sources that say that liquids result in stretched stomas. A RNY surgery creates a stoma that does not have an "exit valve". The reason you shouldn't drink fluids is because they flush food OUT not block it in, allowing a person to eat more foods/calories than recommended.
Number one reason? Pretty sure that is over eating past the full point.
Or you could blame those pop-rock candies?

Thank you for taking the time n help to reply. I don't drink when I eat. I eat more peanut butter then I ever did, 2-3 times a day sometimes. I eat before bed thinking this is the worst time to eat. N that's a peanut butter sandwich, cereal or pasta. I eat lots of pasta, sometimes I can eat a large amounts n sometimes not as much. There r days I feel like I eat all day long. I'm not very active I don't exercise, so I don't feel like I'm burning off calories. I've been under a lot of stress this past 2 yr, raising my now 9yr. old grandson. Im 62. When I was heavy I had NO metabolism, maybe I have to much now. Can't win. To heavy then now to thin. I just recently gained 2lbs. I guess it will take some time to get on the other 23 lbs on. Again thank you for ur help.
Wasn't the question on how to GAIN weight?
I would think that the worst advice ever would be to eat low nutrient, high calorie foods like chips and sweets, and drink beer.
#just sayin

Your suggestion is to take up a difficult-to-break habit that can lead to a gain FAR greater than what the OP likely has in mind.
And you're totally right, the worst advice ever is to drink alcohol after WLS.
