I think my calories are too low....
I started this whole process as a light weight (after losing about 60lbs on my own and keeping it off from 2011-2017). I was 230lbs (5'7") the day of surgery. I ate 300-700 calories during loss phase. Starting out very low (maybe even lower than the 300 at first as I progressed). I crawled my way to 700 at 6 months and hit maintenance at 6 1/2 months (losing 90lbs) and now have nearly doubled that (eating 1,200) and I'm still losing - FAST actually. I'm adding 100 calories per wee****il I maintain. I had a resting metabolic rate test done and my metabolic rate came back at slightly higher than average for my age/weight/height.
Starvation mode isn't a thing we need to worry about. We've got lots of chub for our body to consume! Listen to the vets and stay low calorie and get to goal fast!

Hi,
As crazy as this sounds, (it may be because I am a revision) I think my caloric intake is too low. I have 37 pounds to go to get to 165 and my highest weight was in the 340's . My goal is to lose it in the next 6 months. I have already lost and maintained 2/3 of my weight for many years, regained some due to GERD, hiatal hernia, menopause and chronic illness as well as some bad choices but still within the guidelines of successful weight loss. So I am down 132 from highest weight with 37 to go.
I realize that the goal is to get it off as fast as possible and then give myself a 10 pound buffer, but it seems based on my tracking food, protein, water and carbs diligently over the last 8 weeks, that I lose better when I eat more than 600 calories, add veggies ( greens, lettuce and tomato, spinach, zucchini, carrots, green beans) and keep my protein intake high. Getting in 75 to 95 grams a day and less than 20 carbs. I just don't want to get to the point where my body gets used to only eating 600 calories forever. I think that kind of low carb dieting really messes with your resting metabolic rate and the minute you eat a carb again, you gain three pounds and all you do is fight with the same three pounds when you eat with carbs in it.
I do believe in starvation mode and metabolic reset with the right foods although I do not think starvation mode applies at a BMI of 55. Not sure at 202 pounds and a low 30 BMI if the same rules applies which is where I currently am at the moment. It seems like I break stalls when I eat an extra protein snack and get my calories to 700.(eating 5 times a day)
My NUT did not talk about calories at all rather eatingmore frequently and focusing on protein. I have read extensively on the internet what other nuts and surgeons recommend and it is so vastly different that a lot is up to interpretation.
. However, no one really spoke about calories and of course my NUT's handouts included a bunch of carby foods like grits, cereal, oatmeal , farina etc as well as lots of fruit which for me is a no no. Since sweets are off the table and see no reason to eat SF snacks, I really don't want to live a total Atkins lifestyle forever. I like veggies and salad a lot. Do you think it is worth a try? I know all of us are different and can tolerate different amounts of food to maintain or even lose.
any time you eat carbs, including carbs vegetables, you body is going to hold water using it to process the carbs. This is where your three pound yo yo develops.
Mas long as you eat carbs, you will have this yo yo. Every time.
It is nothing to do with your body getting used to anything.
Just because you " love" to eat something doesn't mean you can or should, if you want to lose weight. I love eating Twinkies too, but I can't eat them with my protein and lose weight.
Starvation mode is something like what happens to ppl with anorexoa nervous. They literally burn every bit of the fat off their bodies. As long as you have fat on your body and are struggling to lose the fat, you are NOT in starvation mode and unlikely to be.

Howdy and thanks for the responses. They are appreciated.
I appreciate the sentiment about"just because you can doesnt mean you should" . That proverb has been thrown around here on OH for the last 15 years that I have been here. And although I am not an SME (subject matter expert) on RNY, I am aware that newbies think they can change some basic rules and still be successful.
That being said said, I am not talking about TWINKIES, a glass of alcohol, a candy bar or other concession that should never be considered in the early stages of weight loss. My NUT plan post op is atrocious with lots of carbs so we know that doesnt work either. However, I was talking about adding more protein or eating more low carb vegetables like lettuce, spinach, cucumber, califlower or green beans to balance my all protein low fat diet. I can assure you that none of the things got me fat although over eating did. :)
My takeway from this post (and yes I am listening) is to get the weight off as quickly as possible, then see what my thresh holds are in terms of calories based on maintaining weight. My two options are lose slower with 80% protein and 20 percent low carb veggies or dont eat the extra 100 calories and lose an extra pound a month.
Thanks!!
