Protein Bars That Don't Cause Nausea?
Hi guys! This is my first post after lurking for a while. This past week I hit my one month post surgery mark and my dietician told me I could start having protein bars if I wanted and gave me a list of approved ones. I really want to keep some on hand in my purse in case I get stuck somewhere without good food options.
Well, I've been trying them at home and it has not been going well. Quest bars make me the sickest. MetRX and Premier Protein have caused serious nausea. Not sure what I should try next or if I should just give up on protein bars at this point.

Quite honestly, I am surprised they recommended protein bars so early. Protein bars are very hard...
((4) weeks everything should be soft & smooth. I suggest listening to your pouch and sticking to liquid protein for now. Protein powders in your soups.
Dense proteins as you progress through your different levels.
During our dietician classes. They discouraged protein bars. They tend to be high in calories.
Great as an emergency protein when you are out & about & stuck for protein options
You have to do what is best for you & your pouch!
If your pouch is screaming nausea? Listen & avoid them for now...

Yeah, the diet they have me on definitely seems to move faster than what I've seen other people posting about here. Protein bars are the first thing I've had trouble with, though. Well, aside from issues with premier protein right after I was off clear liquids.
The plan I discussed with my dietician doesn't have protein bars as a staple, just an emergency option. Testing at home was to see if I tolerate them.... Which I don't seem to.
Right now it's hard to think of anything I can keep on hand for emergencies, though. Most of what I'm eating is perishable. Any suggestions that work for you?
Premier Protein shakes are great in an emergency. I haven't tried any protein bars yet and probably won't until I'm at goal. Those little babybel cheeses are good. Even though they're a perishable they have to be out for a while before anything happens. You can also put an ice pack in a little bag to keep yogurt, meat or other snacks.

Great information, Sandra! I was going to post but you said it perfectly. Protein bars should be an emergency option. Too early at just 4 weeks post-op but I use nuts, cheese, turkey jerky, protein powder as backup food when on the go. I do usually have a protein bar in my drawer at work but have one maybe once a month, if that.
Were the vets on here they would totally back this up... nix them for now!

Mahalo is right, at 4 weeks I was just starting to be able to tolerate dense protein, and definitely could not have handled a protein bar.
protein bars are also off the table for me. Because foods like that trigger cravings for me. For more sweets, more carbs etc.
One thing you will hear a lot on the boards is that hunger is not an emergency, and doesn't require an immediate response. It's a big change for most of us post op, but it's true.
Having said that, I do still need to have some convenience food handy for busy days. Usually my go to's include:
small servings of nuts (but I couldn't eat this at 4 weeks)
jerky(turkey was softer )
boiled eggs
baby bell cheese
premiere protein shakes
moon cheese (I only bought this once, but it was nice to have a crunchy option)
a few slices of peppers with hummus ( not protein firward, but satisfying in a pinch)
also, I wonder if you tried one of the vegan protein bars? It might be easier to digest?
I also hear a lot of people talk about quest protein chips, but I haven't tried it.

I am never hungry, but I tend to feel weak & nauseated when I am over due to eat.
She is much further out & certainly has had an opportunity to experiment...
I am not sure where you are from. After much consideration, I finally tried Tim Hortons Chili.
It was recommended many times when you are out and about.
I wanted a Montreal Airport option for lunch on a (5) lay over. It is quite yummy & wet... I ordered a small & ate 1/3 & brought the rest home.
I tolerate the Premiere Protein... Definitely give it another chance. Our tolerances change from day to day...

Quest bars upset a lot of people's stomachs from what I've read. You may not tolerate sugar alcohols well.
Maybe guve Nugo Slim's a shot. They have no artificial sweeteners, and only 3G of sugar (comes from the fact the are coated in actual dark chocolate). They are 180 calories and 17g of protein for the crunchy peanut butter bars.
I dont eat eat protein bars much as the are such highly processed foods, but in a pinch (often when traveling) they are certainly convenient. And the Nugo Slims are easiest on my stomach.
