I tried them for the first time on Friday. I got the 4 piece and it was perfect! Very moist, flavorable and delicious.
If refrigeration or a cold pack lunch bag isn't an option, here are a few things I've had on the go:
boiled or deviled eggs, small tins of tuna with peppers, baby bell cheese, hummus and veggies, protein shakes, tiny bit of nuts, jerky.
Good luck!

I will put two peeled hard boiled eggs in a sandwich baggie with salt and pepper already on them, also have been known to put sliced grilled chicken or sliced grilled steak in a sandwich baggie as well...my baggie o' meat. LOL. babybel cheeses are nice to carry, they have a softer consistency than cheese sticks. Lots of people do cold cut cheese roll-ups... Not for me, as cold cuts don't particularly agree with me...
When I was early out if I carried a protein bar, I also put it in a sandwich bag- so I could eat only half and save the rest for another time...
Greek yogurt cups, cottage cheese cups. I know at Costco I used to buy 8 pack cups of cranberry chicken salad....

Another way to keep protein bars from becoming a pile of mush is store them in a hard sided eyeglass case. I always get a case with my prescription glasses and they work perfectly. I would imagine you could also buy one at Walmart pretty inexpensively. It fits the protein bar perfectly and helps it hold up for when you do need it.

I am further out than you -- so of course, there are some things I eat now that maybe aren't the easiest/best for you -- but I carry my food in an insulated bag nearly every day -- I commute quite a distance. Here's some things I pack:
grilled chicken breast, cut in pieces (3 oz)
.5 oz pouch of tuna
bacon jerky (1 oz)
string cheese (1 serving)
Swiss cheese cubes (1 oz)
****tail shrimp (approx. 8 medium/3 oz)
Pepperoni/Salami with cream cheese (3 oz meat/.25 oz cc)
1 oz almonds (about 15 almonds)
1 oz pecans (about 11 pecans)
1/4 c. hummus with celery sticks
1/2 Quest bar
BLT (3 to 4 slices thin sliced bacon with slice of tomato wrapped in a lettuce leaf)
2 to 3 oz canned chicken mixed with .25 oz cream cheese and hot sauce
Chili without beans (2.5 oz or about a 1/3 c.)
Sloppy Joe meat wrapped in a lettuce leaf (about 2 oz)
I hope this helps give you some ideas! Good luck.

Can't believe I never thought of cream cheese in my chicken salad!

Right? I got the idea from that Buffalo Chicken Dip that is always at potlucks/parties. I mix with cream cheese and hot sauce -- and voila! :-)
