A whole mile!
It IS a big deal. Walking used to be my nightmare. Now it doesn't faze me a bit, even though I still have some pain in my left knee. I walk 1.5 miles on my lunch hour daily and it feels great. As you lose weight, you'll be able to do even more.
Congratulations!

congrats! It is a great feeling.
Every year we go to an outlet mall in August before school starts to buy school clothes for the kids. In the last few years before surgery I couldn't even make it around the mall before being too exhausted to keep going. half an hour, to an hour tops. This year we waited and went about 1 month after my surgery. Do you know, even in that little bit of time I had improved so much that I was able to walk around for 5+ hours shopping. It felt wonderful. My bank account didn't care for it so much, though.
