RNY Verses VGS
There really are very few common experiences every RNY or VSG patient share. For example, my good friend had an RNY and can not eat foods too high in fat, but can eat pasta, rice, bread, etc. I, on the other hand, don't seem to have many issues with fat, but can not eat the foods she can. We both can eat limited amounts of sugar without issues. Others can not. The same situations can happen between VSG patients. I would not discount a surgery because of your experience with one postop.
Issues with gas do seem related to eating the wrong foods, whatever they may be for your body. If your friend has a lot of bathroom issues, it seems he needs to figure out the culprit and eliminate that from his diet. For many, simple carbs (which we should avoid), is often the culprit. I rarely have gas issues.
I am glad you are considering all options. GERD, especially silent GERD, is a big deal.

I don't feel deprived or like I have to live without my favorite foods at all. I have merely learned to be satisfied with a much smaller amount of some things, and other things I used to love I simply don't care about anymore. For example, there were cupcakes at work and I felt completely satisfied with one-half instead of wanting two (I love cupcakes). Your tastes will change. Most sweets are so sweet that I don't want more than a small amount anyway, and it doesn't bother me one bit. The only problem I have is an upset stomach from eating too much fat or carbs at once (i.e. pepperoni pizza). I can eat those foods, but they mostly don't appeal to me anymore. I have not thrown up at all since surgery. It is hard to understand this before surgery, but I just don't care about the foods that I avoid. Those foods made me fat. I used to think it was a big deal, but it does not bother me even a little bit now. I simply eat how I need to for the weight I want to be. No matter what surgery you have, you must limit your food intake or you won't lose weight.

Here is a doctor's video that addresses your question. This is not my doctor, but if my doctor had videos he would probably say the same stuff.

PS This video might prepare you better to discuss the issues with your doctor - s/he saw your test results and would be your best resource.

The dr also fixed a hitatal hernia - the second best thing that happened from surgery.
