Baby Aspirin?

I saw a new primary care dr. today and she asked if I took a daily baby aspirin. I explained that post RNY, NSAIDS are not recommended. She understands, but with the small dose I wonder about the risk vs benefit. Stroke prevention vs. a possible ulcer....what do you think? What has your dr. recommended?

I think taking it every single day is a bad idea. As an emergency, I wouldn't hesitate to take an NSAID, but I wouldn't take it every day.

I should have added, that if you are at a particular risk for a stroke, there are medications specifically for that that aren't NSAIDs.

I agree with Grim. You and your doctor have to weigh the risks versus benefits, but unless there is a very specific reason that the doctor thinks low dose aspirin is the BEST way for you to avoid a heart attack or stroke despite your RNY and the risk of ulcers, I wouldn't take the chance of an ulcer in the blind, remnant stomach.

Nope. Bleeding ulcers are not on my "good idea to have" list.. Remnant stomach can't be scoped...

No, I don't think i'll ever use that.

Why does she thinks you need that?

I agree with Lora that you and your dr. have to weight the risk of bleeding/ulcer versus the benefit of aspirin. The American Heart Association website has a lot of information on this topic as it relates to heart attack and stroke prevention in women, if this is an issue related to heart disease.

Thanks for the input. I have no risk factors at all, but will probably keep one in my bag in case of emergency.

About 18 months ago I was with a woman who was having a heart attack and the aspirin in her purse was definitely a good move! But...as I said, no risk factors for me thanks in large part to my weight loss.

Being a 60 yr old woman who takes NO prescription medication made me a bit of a celeb at the doctor's office.
