Quick question - can we eat popcorn?
I'm around 6 months out. Going to the movies with a friend today and was just wondering if a small popcorn, no butter was an option? Not a big deal if it isn't. It's the first time I've been to an actual movie theater since the surgery lol! I've been to drive-ins a ton this summer but not a real theater so I never thought of it before.

I smuggle in a bag of beef jerky when I go to the movies. You are certainly far enough out that it shouldn't bother your pouch.
But I don't think I would eat the popcorn. It would be a total carb derail moment for me. This is one of those bridges you have to cross on your own, I think. Is it worth it to you? That's what you ask yourself.

I pretty much lived on popcorn once I started having problems with my lap-band. It was one of the only foods that went down and stayed down without making me gag. So since it was a staple in my diet, I asked if I could have it post-bypass.
I was told to wait a year, because it swells and because the kernels are hard to digest. But I would imagine that having a little, after 6 months would be okay!? Have fun at the movies!
I absolutely would NOT eat it at 6 months out. You are still at your prime malabsorption period right now... why ruin it with empty carbs?
But I will tell you that at 4 years out, I love the stuff... and I've only had a problem with it once (didn't chew enough and it got stuck somewhere. I wanted to die). Otherwise, Pouchy could eat it endlessly if I let him.
As for no butter... I am not afraid of fat, so I get it with butter. Fat does not make us fat. But that's up to you.

I agree!! I did not eat it during my losing phase but enjoy it now.

Same here. I go to the movies a lot, and always have popcorn. I don't get it with butter. Movie theater popcorn is cooked in oil, so is pretty high in calories already, without the topping.

At 5 months out, I wouldn't eat movie theater popcorn because it's oil cooked and I just can't justify the calories, but I enjoy a 100-calorie bag of microwave popcorn every now and then. It's great when I want something to crunch on without totally derailing myself, and it doesn't set off my carb cravings like other crunchy things can. It doesn't really offer much nutritionally, but a minor splurge every once in awhile keeps me from feeling so deprived that I want to go off the deep end and totally gorge.
I'm 8 years out and allow myself to eat some as a treat when I go to the movies. Of course I budget for it in my food menu and track it in my calorie count. I don't physically have a problem with it, but I could see it becoming a problem if I had popcorn in the house all the time. Too many carbs. So I don't buy it. I'm sure you'll make the right decision for you!
