Kidney Stones

Just wondering if anyone gets them now worse than before surgery?

I've actually had to have several surgeries because of them.

The biggest reason for kidney stones is not drinking enough. After surgery our kidneys work overtime processing all the fat we burn, which is partly why we need to drink more than usual.

Calcium carbonate can cause stones too. Another good reason to make sure we take calcium citrate, not carbonate.

I have always only taken the citrate, but I even cut that way back after being bombarded with huge stones. It hasn't helped though.

I had a pretty large stone prior to surgery - none since then. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I don't have them ever again. I'm pretty vigilant about drinking fluids.

I'm almost five months post op and am having lower back pain. I have called my urologist to send over orders for a KUB x-ray. I had problems with kidney stones prior to surgery and I'm afraid I'm dealing with another one now.

Did anyone have problems with heartburn related to kidney stones? I started having heartburn last night for the first time since prior to surgery.

Thanks!

I never said it would be easy. I said it would be worth it.

RNYers are at an increased risk of kidney stones. I did not have any in the 45 years before my surgery but had several in just a couple of years after my RNY. I take a medication to try to prevent them, I cut down on salt, and I have tried to increase my fluids (I ahve been only somehwat successfully, but I still drink more now than I ever did before my RNY!), and I also eliminated all calcium carbonate (even in the multivitamin that I was taking... I switched to one with no calcium).

Here is a post I wrote a while back on some research I did on the increased risk of kidney stones for RNYers.
