surgery in a few weeks ? RNY
My 10 month anniversary is in 9 days! A year ago at this very time, I was making the go/no go decision on surgery. It was the right decision for me. I have lost 100 pounds, I'm at my goal weight, but I can tell you that at this time a year ago, I felt as though I could never lose another pound. WLS has been a game changer. I am just coming to grips with the long term changes necessary around the eating choices I make. (I watch the first video below as a reminder.)
Here are two sources of information concerning the questions you posed:
1--From National Inst of Health:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3470459/
This is article is dense reading.
2-- More accessible is a presentation from this doctor. Let me say, this doctor is not my doctor, nor am I getting paid for pointing out his videos, I just find that they are a sound presentation to answer your questions. If anyone else has better overall description of what WLS is all about, please let me know about it.

Best of luck with making this important decision.

I'm going to assume you're in Ohio just because of your name :) I'm in Ohio too FYI. I was very very concerned with regain before the surgery. I'm only 7 months out from surgery so I can't reassure you there but I'm less worried now than I was then because I know that I have followed every single rule since the surgery. The point for the 12-18 months after surgery is to learn these rules and healthy lifestyle so if I can do it now and have the willpower to make the right choices - and A LOT of it IS willpower when I'm choosing between beef jerky and popcorn and can easily choose the popcorn because I know the beef jerky has less carbs and will keep me full longer - then I feel more confident I can do it long term.
Before the surgery I could not have done that. Or if I did it once I couldn't have replicated that choice multiple times. Now I make choices like that every day, many times without thinking.
I didn't have a 6 month waiting period because my insurance didn't cover it so I'm not going to say that it's bad you couldn't follow the pre=op diet. But I couldn't follow MY OWN diets so I'm not one to say anything about that anyway!
I'm very very hopeful that I am not one to have regain. But so far I don't regret anything.
OH and from my own research and more up to date studies I've seen the actual percentage of dumping is lower than what was reported for a while. I haven't dumped once in 7 months although I was super nervous about it.
