Surgery Confusion?
Forum newbie here.. :)
I have been seeing an awesome surgeon here in NC, and have completed all the requirements (seminar, psych, nutrition, endoscopy, RMR) except fitness test and support group which are within two weeks.
When I came in I was interested in the sleeve, but he suggested because of my BMI (44 ugh) that I might lose more and be more successful with the RNY.
I am a little apprehensive about RNY, but I also know the sleeve doesn't have as many longevity studies as RNY.
Anybody have an experience where they switched surgery type? I welcome all thoughts!
Hi and welcome-
you might have some luck posting this to the general discussion board also.
I had the choice between the sleeve and bypass and I'm choosing the RNY bypass over the sleeve. The main reason for this is that i have PCOS and with that comes insulin and metobolic issues. I felt that the RNY was the best option to help with the PCOS.
Plus, I felt if i was going to have it done, i needed to choose the gold standard.
Thank you! I have added the post to the general forum, too.
I think I'm starting to lean more toward the RNY at the moment due to it being the gold standard...I just don't know anyone who's had done. I think I might try to meet some people.
Thanks again for the response! Are you scheduled for surgery soon?
If metabolic problems are your biggest concern, you owe it to yourself to also research the Duodenal Switch. The DS has not only the very best long-term, maintained weight-loss stats, it also has the best stats for resolving or preventing co-morbs like diabetes, high cholesterol, PCOS, insulin resistance, and so on.
If the RNY is the gold standard, the DS is the platinum. (*grin*)

Where in NC are you? I am in NC as well. I originally wanted the sleeve, but my doctor thinks RNY will be better for weight loss and to conquor my sweet tooth. I meet with the dietician on the 28th, psych eval the 29th...hoping for surgery by the end of 2015.

Statistically, the Duodenal Switch has the very best long-term, maintained weight-loss results. It has a Sleeved stomach plus an intestinal bypass similar to, but more effective than, that of the RNY. With the RNY, you'll malabsorb certain vitamins and minerals for life, but calories only for 18-24 months. With the DS, you'd also malabsorb those vitamins and minerals for life, but you'd also malabsorb calories for life, too.
Start reading because this topic has come up several times here; you'll read valid points both ways. It might help you decide or it might get you more unsure than ever. The decision factors seem to be acid-reflux, NSAID use, blood sugar issues, what the doctor recommends along with what the patient prefers to live with, and the amount of weight loss expected. A suggestion that may help your brain is to write down the pros and cons of each on paper (speaking of brain, RNY was a no-brainer for me because of Type II diabetes). Good Luck.
