Tattoos before surgery

Hi, everyone.

Just wondering if there would be any issues getting a tattoo the day before my surgery. I'll be on Opti at the time. The only thing out of the ordinary would be taking a Xanax or something before the tattoo, as it's in a sensitive place.

I'm planning on calling my hospital to check, but figured I'd ask here first.

Thanks in advance!

Your immune system will be weaker from the stress of surgery and it is not a good time to do a tattoo.

Your body will be needing all of its healing resources to deal with shock of surgery.  Don't run the risk of infection.  Wait until you are healed from the surgery to do the tattoo.

Absolutely not.  Hospitals are full of germs and you risk infection.  Wait until much later.  Some doctors won't even do elective surgery if you have had a recent tattoo.

And I say this as someone who has a few tattoos.

I would not. I have numerous tattoos and it is like having an opened wound on your body. So infection could set in. I would wait till after surgery.

You body is going to change and get smaller. Depending where you get the tattoo it may change the look of it. When getting the tattoo you may feel a little woozy since you are not eating food and on the liquid diet.

Good luck with your surgery.

Is there some reason you need to do this the day before surgery?

I would never risk having my WLS canceled over a tattoo.

Besides the health risks, I'd also want to wait and have the tatoo done after you have lost the weight. Otherwise you are risking some serious skin sag where you have it done.

This! Even if you're having it somewhere that you don't expect to have skin changes (ankle, shoulderblade, etc.), you never know what your skin is going to look like-- both immediately after the bulk of your weight loss, and a year or two after once your weight has re-distributed itself.

In other words, that tribal tattoo will end up looking like a picket fence in 2 years....

depending on where it is going, they will be scrubbing you vigorously with beta done from boobs to pubes. I don't imagine that would be good for a less than one day old tattoo
