Emergency surgery

I want to write this now as I'm finally at a decent pain level.

I had RNY 12/22/14 and I weighed 239. I am now 145 and a couple pounds away from my first goal of 100 pounds.

i have suffered with ulcers from about the two month mark. I took protonix and carafate religiously without feeling any relief. Finally they said they would do an endoscopy.

They did the endoscopy and took a biopsy of the ulcer. The next morning i woke up in the most pain I've ever felt. The ulcer had blown out and I had a perforation from the endoscopy. I was going septic.

i called an ambulance because I was in the worst pain ever and they did an emergency repair on me as soon as the results from the MRI came back as I had a hole.

i was in the hospital for a week, went back in again a week later because of pain and my right side went numb. I am now petrified to get another ulcer or go through this again.

they told me that they won't know if the repair worked for about two months. They will have to do another endoscopy. If it doesn't work I will have to get a reconstruction. Sigh.

ive done all the right things. Vitamins, not cheating, eating small bites etc and this still happened to me. It happens to 1% of people. Also suffering from very low blood pressure and my heart rate is slow too.

i just wanted to share. If your doctor has put you on ulcer mess.. Continue to take them everyday. I have been told I will be on protonix forever and carafate for a long time.

It was the scariest event of my life. I am now again on soft foods. I made it through purees and liquids again. :)

I'm so thankful for my bariatric team. And I don't regret the surgery. I love my results and I'm happy I did it still even through it all.

Wow--it sounds as if you're lucky to be here.  So glad you are doing better, and hope you continue to improve.

Thank goodness you called for aid!  I nearly died from bleeding ulcers as well and it takes a long time to rebuild your iron levels.  So happy you are safe and well monitored!

Oh, I'm so sorry you went thru this! Sending vibes that this repair 'takes'. I was on carafate post op for prevention of ulcers, I'm glad I took it religiously.

Be aware protonix can cause gas in some people,.. just fyi, Prevacid 30 mg twice a day works best, very quick relief, for my intestinal problems... I get gastritis and have had two twists, and use some herbals for my enzymes...I don't know how many twists I have avoided with using the prevacid and herbals to reduce inflammation in my gut.dh
