I've had good luck using an OTC stool softener.  Good luck.

Letting you know my WLS handbook recommends a stool softener under the brand name Senekot-S

I don't remember--it was a generic and less expensive than the other one on the shelf. (shrug)  It worked, so I didn't worry too much about the label!

Sorry in advance for the poop talk! I started having issues with constipation right after surgery, often to the point of pain and bleeding. I added fiber to my morning protein shakes and started taking milk of magnesia occasionally. The problem I have now is that it's always one extreme or the other -- either nothing is moving, or it's trying to move all day, most often in a liquid capacity. I've tried to titrate the dose of MoM, but 1.5 TBSP causes diarrhea while 1 doesn't do anything (and enough of it sticks to the measuring cup that it's hard to be any more precise than that). I've thought of trying Miralax, but my only experiences in the past were having to take a whole bottle for capsule endoscopies, so I kind of associate it with being *completely* cleaned out. I also tried regular laxatives which caused really bad cramping and didn't move anything anyway. Does anyone have any suggestions?

fiber also used to make my stool too hard. I had the most luck with stool softeners. Laxatives are gonna make you go liquid. Stool softeners just soften up what is going to pass, without making it liquid.

I started with two capsules at bed time every night and increased the number until I was having the consistency of stool that was comfortable.i was up to 12 capsules a night, when I had to take a medicine that was constipating. My usual happy poop amount was usually six capsules.  You can't overdose on stool softener.

any generic brand will work and be cheaper than brand name.

I add a half of a capful of Miralax to my morning protein shake five times a week.  I also take Fiber Gummies seven days a week.  I also take a probiotic (Culturelle) daily.

My plumbing seems happy with this concoction

My daily recipe is: a capful Miralax, 500mg magnesium, and one stool softener.  All taken a hour before bedtime.
