Hi Gang,

One of the things that have amazed me is how much tastes/things change. As a MO person, I had difficulty running/jogging. It was sad because it was an activity that I used in my 20s to try to keep my weight down AND it was an activity I LOVED to hate.

When I took up the sport again, post-op, it was to lose weight for my wedding. I told myself "If you don't like it, you can quit when your trail shoes fall apart".

Over a year later, I noticed my trail shoes are falling apart.  However, instead of quitting (I wasnt even contemplating it), I was musing about ways to bankroll another pair.

While thinking about this, I was running in the woods through a National park that I love. It is so quiet. There are two trails that run parrell to each other for a bit, with some woods in between, before the second one veers off to the west while the first continues south.

While running south on the first trail, I scared TWO deer that had bedded down together. They jumped up and magestically boinged away and I felt so lucky to see such a magestic and beautiful thing.

Now, I have never been fast.  I wish I WERE a fast runner and it is something I work towards on and off.  I am actually a bit annoyed I am so slow (a 10.59-14.40 minute mile depending on terrain).

After I completed the first, southward trail, I doubled back and took the westward veering trail.

This time I saw the two deer right away.  You could literally see the contempt and annoyance cross their faces.  I thought "Oh. No!  This is going to turn into an Episode of "When Nature Fights Back"".

The first deer remained bedded down. The second one, however, stood up and arrogantly assessed me "running toward it."

Then a weird thing happened.

That second deer raised its back leg to scratch its ear!  While scratching its ear, balancing on 3 legs, it started defacating while I "ran" by less than 15 ft away.

It was as if it were saying "You are so slow, that I can balance on 3 legs, scratch my ear, go to the bathroom AND give you a head start and you will NEVER catch me!!!!'

Then i wished it was deer season.

True story...and it happened to me!

Don't be offended.  Animals have keen senses...it probably sensed you had WLS (making you a member of CONSTI-NATION) and wanted to show-off how easily it can be done.  I'm jealous.

Deer look gentle, but they will attack.

Animals KNOW how to communicate their thoughts SO eloquently without ANY words lol.  My late twenty-six year old Persian cat was an EXPERT ..you knew exactly what he was trying to say .  Yours sound FUN ! Wish I had a forest here to run through ..

Indeed they will. Especially when food is scarce. Their hooves are razor sharp.  I was especially worried since these two seemed well habituated to people.

Amazing story!  You make running sound enjoyable. I plan on trying to start jogging this week. I'll be lucky to get to my mailbox. So your ten + minute miles seem like a dream to me. I live in a village so I may not see any deer, but I have seen a skunk family out walking. However I ran away from them instead of towards them. 😜. Keep running!!!  I bet you will enjoy those new sneakers!
