malabsorb calories for how long?

I know there is a honeymood period where malabsorption of calories is the greatest, but is there any chance that we malabsorp some calories for the rest of our lives given this surgery?  Does it depend on how much intestine they removed (distal, medial, etc...can't remember the names and actual defintions for this but its like small, medium, large in terms of amount removed).

Just curious.. Thanks for sharing any info you have.

For most RNY folks, the malabsorption lasts for about 12-18 months. By about that time, the intestines have grown more villi and you will again absorb all of the calories you eat again. Keep in mind that vitamin malabsorption is forever, so you need to keep up on your supplements. :D

There is no firm answer. I've seen studies that say it's pretty minimal with the RNY that most docs perform. My surgeon said it was negligible, and not to count on it.

The prevailing wisdom is it lasts about 18 months. But it doesn't simply switch off. It is highest at first, and decreases gradually, beginning right after surgery. Most sources say that a small amount of permanent malabsorption of fats takes place, but the amounts cited vary. Most also say yhat calories from simple carbs are pretty much always absorbed 100%

I should have added that yes, distal RNY also produces more malabsorption initially, but not forever, except maybe fats. The only surgery that will give you serious permanent malabsorption of fat and protein is the DS. But they will also absorb pretty much 100% of simple carbs.

You can eat enough of the wrong things with any surgery to end up gaining weight.

I think I still malabsorb fat five plus years post rny.  And mine was proximal not distal! This is not " supposed " to happen but when I eat usual amounts of fat ( catered food, restaurant food) I almost always have soft light yellow stool the next morning which my doctor told me was a sign that the body was getting rid of fat.  My ex husband who had distal RNY ten years before me also had the same response to high fat meals.

i'm really glad my tool still works !

I am 11 1/2 years out proximal RNY and I think there is still some degree of fat malabsorption with me. I almost always see a "film" on top of water after bowel movements.
