Saw a co-worker I have't seen in a while today...

So I visited a former coworker I haven't seen in a few months today. She immediately carried on about how great I looked (yeah!!--NSV!!) but then went into what I'm I doing/how am I losing the weight. Before I had any chance to offer a response she blurted out-- "you had surgery didn't you"?? Now, mind you she is one of the few I would have trusted to tell-- but it still caught me off guard.

I tell people that I know causally (who ask) that I'm working at losing weight by eating better and exercising. It never dawned on my that I'd be squarely asked if I had surgery. I'm just glad this happened with someone I trust vs. an acquaintance. I don't plan on lying about it either way-- but it just never crossed my mind that I'd be directly asked if I'd had surgery.

Any who-- it felt great to be ogled over! Its the first time someone who didn't know about the surgery already paid attention to how I I'm changing.

Okay this is probably hypocritical of me but that would annoy me that someone would assume I had surgery. Which of course I did have surgery lol. It's so complicated for me! I don't hide it, I posted it on FB so I would be accountable and not shy away from it to anyone. But to have someone just blurt it out would probably hurt my feelings. BUT since she is one you trust that's great. I'm glad she was ogling over you :)

I can really relate to this -- I am a very private person, so I kept my WLS to myself.  However, I am not a liar either, so when someone asks directly, I always tell the truth.  The first person who did this was actually my husband's mother, and I was really caught off guard.

Congrats on all the positive feedback, however!  That's a wonderful feeling, isn't it?

Oh yeah people can be pretty ballsy. I had someone ask me if I was ill and had cancer. I was like do I look sick. I told her I had surgery. It makes life easier. I know it can be uncomfortable. People will just say or ask whatever they want sometimes without thinking.

I'm glad it was someone you trusted-  *hugs*  I'm like you in the "what I'll tell" department.  Only two of my coworkers know about my surgery.  For those who don't, if they comment, I will tell them the truth: I'm eating less, exercising more, and drinking lots of H20.  There's  no need for me to add the surgery bit-  That's too personal for me.

Glad you got that wonderful surprise ogling!

I had the same experience a few days ago.  I just straight up tell everyone that I had gastric bypass surgery and move on.  If they ask questions, great, but most people just go, "Oh, okay," and move on with their other questions which usually include how much have I lost and how do I feel.  I haven't gotten any judgmental responses I think mostly because I'm upfront about it and I don't treat it like it's a big deal or secret.

I'm glad it worked out well with your work friend.  Sometimes having surgery is like being pregnant--everyone is an expert!  :D
