I had bypass surgery on 7/28 - I have little energy and just don't feel well in general.  Is this normal?  My stomach is still a little sore too.  I am back to work, but it's been a struggle to get ready in the morning and I'm tired; probably a little depressed too.  I'm eating canned tuna, scrambled eggs, and previous soft foods, but I can't seem to get 3 meals in.  I'm supposed to be off the protein shakes, but I'm thinking of having 4 ozs to keep some protein in my system.  Is this normal?

Yes it's normal to feel exhausted and wrung out.  This isn't a minor surgery!

If you can tolerate the protein shakes then they may help you feel stronger and help with your protein totals.  I am 2 years out and still use protein powder in my greek yogurt!  I also eat every 3-4 hours.

It took me 5 weeks to feel back to normal.  Hormone dumping can cause us to feel all over the map so that's normal too.  Hang in there - it does get better!

I found that eating six meals works better for me.  They are tiny meals (example a cheese stick or 1/2 of an egg).   I stayed on protein shakes for two years.  Back in the day there was no pressure to stop drinking them.  They are a great way to get some protein in and that keeps your energy more stable.

There were months when I did not want to eat and just lived on protein shakes.  It takes about three months before eating a meal is easy and in another six months eating too much at a meal becomes an issue.

Right now if you take in too few calories, your body will be forced to fed itself from fat reserves and you will lose weight rapidly.  That is really the reason people lose so quickly with this surgery.  Eating high protein is too make sure that body is burning fat and not muscles and organs.

Eating lots of tiny meals will keep you at a more even energy level.  I hope you try it.

I haven't had surgery yet but the diet education teacher made sure to explain that in the first 6 weeks or so you will feel pretty down and exhausted. She said it's like riding a rollercoaster. As soon as your body snaps out of it you will be on a high. I really hope you feel better soon!
