Saying hi after years of lurking

I've been lurking here for a while.  10 Years really. I lost 70 lbs on my own diet and exercise 2 years ago, and I was going to do all 130(150)lbs the hard way, after a 6 month plateau where I tried everything, and a miscarriage, I lost my ambition.  I gained all my weight back, meanwhile my brother got RNY and just ran his first marathon a couple months ago.  I finally decided the right way can include healthy eating, exercise and a surgical tool.  I've got 2 young boys and I decided it's worth the risk to be healthy for them long term.

I just started my process 3 months ago, but I've lost 15 lbs on my own over the past month, am doing all the good behaviors and got passed by the Dietitian today, and I have my surgeon appt Wed, and will schedule soon after. I'm lucky to work  for the hospital I'm getting the surgery through, so my insurance is good and will go through quickly as they do a lot of nurses.   So I'm hoping for surgery in the next 6 weeks.  Anyway that's where I am, this surgery has become basically my main spare time focus (eating, food, exercise, research, etc).

Anyway HI!

Erica

Erica,

I can relate to this so much. 6 years ago my cousin went through the motions for an RNY. She wanted me to go with her and I couldn't get past the thought of surgery being such a risk. Then 2 years ago I was up to almost 300 lbs and I came to the realization that NOT having the surgery to aide me was a higher risk. I wanted to live...be healthy...and do more with my two sons who are extremely active. May 12, 2014 I had my bypass surgery and I have no regrets other than not doing it sooner. Sometimes surgery is the best tool to take our lives back.

Best of luck to you in your journey and so glad that you posted!

Hi and thanks for telling us a bit about yourself. I personally want to ask you. If you have two young boys right now and work in a hospital...Do you have any problems with legs or knees? Twenty five years ago my children were young and I did a lot of travelling in my job and lots of stairs. My legs were killing me and although I would lose twenty lbs and then 6 months later it would creep back on, I needed to be for my kids after work. So I got the gastric stapling. I never was sorry. I was able to enjoy my kids after work watching them in their sports, being involved with various organizations. Ten years after stapling a few bad habits got in my way and constantly working on diets. If I didn't have the tool I would not be as successful maintaining my weight. Unfortunately I started having a lot of stomach problems until two years ago I was unable to eat any solid foods. I had to drink all my foods by juicing or protein drinks. I learned about RNY. Well I had the RNY as a revision last month on July 10. I feel great. And delighted I can eat food again. I'm relearning good habits that nobody ever told me 25 years ago. Keeping my proteins first, veggies second and just a tad of good carbs if I have room. I was never told that I should not drink while eating my meals. And believe me having the tool really makes me practice the good habits and not be in pain. I just want to tell you that I believe a surgical tool brings all the right eating habits into play so you have time to enjoy your children and live life pain free from carrying all the weight around. Good luck and help yourself so you can enjoy life and family.
