8 days post op heatburn, advice needed

I'm taking my prilosec every morning, but for some reason in the last hour I've gotten a bad case of heart burn. I had been sipping on a protein drink when it started.

I tried some water hoping to help it some but it's not working.

Can we take tums? Why would I have heartburn when I'm taking a PPI?

Sorry to hear that you're having an issue. If possible, maybe place a call to your dr (hopefully they have someone on call) to see what they suggest. I was also on Prilosec for the first 30 days and now I do take Tums sometimes. Hope you feel better.

As far as I know you can take Tums-  I'm on Prilosec, and sometimes I do still get a bit of heartburn.  I think heartburn can be caused by a number of things, and not just what you eat.

Try sleeping with your chest elevated a bit tonight and see what your doc has to say.  *hugs*

Wishing it away,

Right after surgery we can develop motility issues for awhile.  This means that the muscles in your esophagus and intestines are a little "sluggish".  It is caused by the trauma of surgery and anesthesia.  It can feel like heartburn because food and drink back up into the esophagus.  It usually resolves itself.  We can take Tums, but don't make a regular habit of it.  Tums are Calcium Carbonate and can cause kidney stones if taken in excess.
