Ok so I have been watching “What’s on your menu RNYer’s” for some time now. I first can preface by saying, I eat no meat, poultry, seafood, or eggs; I eat a lot of fresh veggies and fruits daily by choice as I really like them. Most of my weight gain has been from my second love of carbs and fats.

I can get my protein in easily via dairy and protein powders; but I see most of you eat very, very little fresh veggies and fruit. Is this per choice or per post op diet restrictions?

We are allowed fruit and vegetables after day 7. It has to be soft.  Here is the menu for yesterday:

B  1/2 poached egg, 1 tbs carrot (soft), 3oz prot. shake in coffee (first)

L  1/4 c mashed pinto beans, .5 ounc of cheese, 1 tbs carrot

D & Snacks 16 oz of protein shake, 1 tbs of steamed brocoli, 1 oz of applesauce for meds.

I peeled 2 carrots and boiled them, then used the leftover nutrien****er to mash the carrots.  I am so tired of eating sweet stuff.  But until I can eat meat, I'm still on the protein drinks.  I did buy some liverwurst.  Well see how that goes.

There is a Dr Wiener on YouTube with many videos.  He advocates eating "clean" after the first 3 months and incorporates vegetables early on.

I don't have much restriction yet, but when I do, I may have to cut back to protein only.

I had some liverwurst and it was delicious. I picked up a can of deviled ham. I just want a bit of it, since it's really salty and fatty.

I'm going to steam some squash and zucchini tonight since they will get soft.

I chose to not eat very much fruit. I went thru a phase where I couldnt stand the thought of anything but salads and fruit. My weightloss really stalled at that point. I also suffer from dumping syndrome. Even natural sugars in fruit can cause me to dump.

Like Lynn above, I can't eat fruit yet, but I'm a huge fan of veggies and plan to make them a big part of my diet.

I'm pre surg- but I have to limit my fruits due to the sugar issue with my PCOS. Also was told only to eat cooked veggies after surgery.

It's also about space in the stomach. Protein has to come first which may not leave much room for veggie/fruit.

Hi Karen,

I diligently eat protein forward and personally I love steak, chicken, turkey, fish, cheese and once I eat my 3 or 4oz of dense protein I don't have a lot of room for veggies or fruit.  I have even made myself some meals where I finish my 4 oz of protein first and had made a little side salad or 1/2 cup of veggies but I am too full and don't end up eating it. I was never a big fruit person pre surgery and rarely eat it now. I have been eating some watermelon cuz its in season but I just personally don't want the added sugar & carbs that come from some fruit & veggies.  My Centre pushes a protein forward meal plan with a little bit of veggies and IF there is room then fruit.  So I stick to my Centre's meal plans. I avoid carbs (such as crackers, rice, pasta, cereal, cookies) like its the plague, its once in a blue moon that I eat it and its usually at a party if I do.  Carbs is how I got obese in the first place, never going back.  Best of luck!!

The only fruit I eat is an occasional banana after a hard run.  I eat different veggies with my dinner.  Protein always first.

Protein first.  Always.

Veggies a very distant second and fruit almost never for me.  Too much sugar makes me dump.

You should really figure out how you are going to eat protein forward before you have your revision so that you are prepared for the change which is VERY different from eating with the Band.  Dairy and protein powder will only get you so far. Good luck with your research!  You've come to the right place.

Hi Karen, it can be done. Search for 'vegetarian' in the search bar and you'll see how others have done it. But I also recommend that you bring this to your nutritionist and ask him/her to make you a sample menu with these restrictions. That is what they are being paid for!
