I'm close to 4 months post op and I have an upper respiratory infection! I haven't taken any over the counter meds because I was on a roll not taking any meds since surgery. But I did go to urgent care last night, they gave me an injection of pain meds and antibiotics and this morning I picked up my z pack. Any suggestions on what to take for this nagging cough, a co-worker who had the lap band five years ago suggested, alka seltzer. I need to make it through the day at work?!? I'm waiting to hear back from my primary dr. Thanks in advance!

For anything respiratory, I use Mucinex. Try the Mucinex DM for a good dose of cough suppressant. I also use tylenol products if I have a fever, or Day Quil.

Alka Seltzer plus is based on aspirin....which is an NSAID. So not the best choice although for many years pre op it was my go-to "cure" for a cold.

Feel better!

Thanks, I'm sipping some tea! My rny nurse suggested I use Mucinex. I ran to the pharmacy and bought some Mucinex tea, I hope it helps, my throat is killing me.

I'm also fighting an upper respiratory virus and have been coughing for 7 days now.  Someone else this morning told me to try Mucinex, I'm going to get some today.  Last time I had this my surgeon recommended Diabetic Robotussin, and sugar free cough drops.  It helps, but I'm sick of coughing.

My rny nurse suggested Mucinex and Robittussin, but didn't mention sugar free. I have been using cough drops. Regular and sugar free, and the sugar free seem to soothe my throat better.

Mucinex!  And coming from someone who's daughter almost died from an upper respiratory infection and now is plagued with every little cold settling in the chest DO NOT SUPPRESS YOUR COUGHS!!!  Unless your coughing is causing damage, or you are only going to use it at night to sleep, you should never suppress your coughs.  Its your body's way of clearing the infection from your lungs.  Do not treat your fever unless it is over 102 as it is also your body's way of killing the germs.  Let your body do what it is supposed to, use sugar free lozenges to soothe the throat, and get extra water in if possible.

I'm sorry you feel like crap!  I hope you heal up soon!!

I've been sipping on Mucinex tea and it has helped my cough just a little. I have no fever, ear infection and was negative for strep throat. I hope my z pak will kick in by at least tomorrow.

I recently had a nasty upper respiratory infection and used ho****er with lemon and honey.  Believe it or not, it worked!  I'd lost my voice and everything!

I was 6 *days* Post-Op when I started to spike a fever and develop a really nasty cough.  I had an open RNY, so it was especially fun with the violent cough.

I was chugging Musinex (or however it is spelled) when I'd had enough and went to the Urgent Care.  The doc there said she doesn't allow that in her house; I took that with a grain of salt... Different things work for different people.

I got a Z-Pack and that was it.  She recommended Diabetic Robitussin with an expectorant.

It was a loooooong 2-weeks...  I hope you get better soon.
