Do you count calories or carbs?

I just want to add -- don't cut protein calories.  I know you want to lose --- but you want to lose fat.  Eating enough protein helps protect your muscle.

Supplied by the WLS Center, I write in a 3 x 5 spiral-bound daily success journal where a space is provided to record counted protein grams only.  However, at the bottom there is just enough blank space for me to jot down what happened during the day that made me count my Blessings.

I count neither, I only count protein and water/fluids. That being said I do eat low carb, just don't count it. I was told "Protein first, then veggies and  if you have any room fruits and starches"

I am another one who counted only protein and water during the losing phase.  I no longer track my food on a regular basis (I am 8 years out), but I do log food for a couple of days a few times a year just to make sure that I'm still on track.  when I do that, it reports calories, protein, carbs, and fat, but I only really pay attention to the calories since that is what counts in terms of how the scale reacts.

Carbs make you crave MORE carbs, and that can cause you to overeat, but it is the extra calories that make you fat.

I never experienced hunger until the carbs came back into my life. I lost most of my weight counting carbs with protein first. Once I was following protein first with whatever carbs I was constantly hungry. Ultimately either way will work and you need to find out what works best for you.

At three weeks out, I was eating between about 200-400 cals/day. For example, on a big eating day that week I had two protein shakes, 2 oz of plain greek yogurt and half an egg scrambled with butter. That was 314 cals, 56g protein, 6g carbs, 4g fat. That is truly all I could tolerate that day...the day before I only managed one protein shake and 1/3 egg. I was stuffed :)

When I was newly post op, I was just trying to get the liquids and vitamins, and protein requirements; added whey to broth and SF cocoa and I skipped the shakes; for a long time. I used 1 ounce cups and tiny ****tail spoons for eating and drinking. I worked up to 2 ounce cups and still using tiny spoons for controlling the food intake. This allowed me to not over eat. I had to retrain myself on sipping. Found eating and sipping different from my pre op life. I counted nothing, and did not worry about the calories only the protein. I had a BMI of 50+ so let my reserves get used up... which took about 6+ months.

I'm so ready to cut things off.  I will say, though, I am 2 sizes down so far.  3 in some cases.
