Alcohol

I am four years out and made the mistake of drinking for the past few years.  When I don't drink, I don't miss it, but when I do drink (often) I binge and black out.  I know I have a problem and right now I am as down as I can feel about it.  My friends drink heavily and I didn't want them to know about the surgery so had drink foisted on me as they were unaware.  I think I have just about reached rock bottom today.  I feel shame beyond words.  I can't believe I've fallen into this trap.  The only upside right now is that being at bottom I can only go up.  I guess I don't understand why this seems a  much bigger problem with RNY compared to other surgeries.  I suppose I have to take this one day at a time starting now.  I'm surprised that there isn't a forum here for this specific problem  I wish there was to hear stories about other people who h ave managed to overcome it.  My recent bloodwork came back ok.  My liver enzymes are slightly elevated but the doctor isn't worried about it because she doesn't know my drinking patterns.  frankly I'm stunned my liver is in as good a shape as it's in, but I know that can't last.  I just feel stuck in a rut and don't know how to get out of it.

There is a group for this Transfer Addiction

Post there and I'm sure you'll get some support, even though the group is a little quiet

I saw it and I've joined.  They do seem quiet but I put out a couple of messages.  PS LOVE your signature line! Oh I just noticed you are dual citizen too.  I didn't keep my UK (EU) passport; I let it expire so I'm not sure what my UK status is now.

If you were born there, you will always be a UK citizen as far as the Government are concerned   You could apply for a passport any time.  I keep mine because my parents are still alive and so I go back every year.  Once they are gone, I will let it lapse ...

Also make your doctor aware.  You can both look at your labs, make sure that the corner you are turning comes with a clean liver and your body is ready to fight this fight with you.  Also, check out some local groups and if you are ready to go, visit some AA groups.  Good luck to you in this journey!

As you said- your are at the bottom.  The only way from now is to go up.

As for liver enzymes- it may take a lot of drinking for them to go really up. In a meantime, you are killing your liver. You know it.  Do you really need the liver enzymes to be high for you to know that? ,

I know that one I start having wine, I want more and more.  So.. To make sure I don't, I do a few things - rules:

I don't drink and drive.

If I have a drink- it it's alaways with others. Don't drink alone.

If I have a drink at home- once the guest leave- I either give the leftover wine away or..dump it. I don't keep alcohol at home when I am there by myself.

Unless you can control what and how much you drink- you may be best just not drink at all.

Thanks, these are good rules.  Luckily I always abide by the first one unlike some of my friends.
