Sick all the time.

Hello,

I had surgery on May 26th and I still feel nauseous whenever I eat and drink. I'm in the soft food stage of my diet but even things like yogurt and water still make me sick. I've tried cold, warm and room temp fluids but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I'm worried because I know I'm not drinking enough water but it's really hard to get my 64 ounces in when just a sip makes me feel sick. Also I don't know if I don't drink normal but I always end up with a ton of air/gas in my tummy and that really makes me sick. Any tricks to help with that? I'm so worried that I will not get past this nausea and will end up needing to have the surgery I worked very hard to get reversed.

Put a reversal out of your mind, because it won't happen unless you are in danger.

Dehydration makes you feel sick, so the only advice I have for you is suck it up and drink water, with some crystal light, Mio drops or a piece of fruit added (to break the surface tension) as if it's your job!

Honestly, what is your alternative?  You can do this!!!!

Once you have the dehydration removed, you will find it much easier to eat.

Thanks for the advice. Each day is a constant struggle but each day I start with the same goal of getting my 64 ounces in!

Dehydration will make you feel nauseous so I agree about getting in enough to drink.

Another hint I learned is the more I drink, the more I want to drink.  Most days I get in at least 100 of fluids but on days that I get busy and don't drink a lot I find I am not thirsty at all.

Once you get in a routine it will get better.  What I do is have at least 16 or more oz between meals.  I have a 32 oz bottle and I usually finish that between breakfast and lunch, than after lunch I finish another one before dinner and than after dinner I nurse another bottle, usually finishing it before  bedtime.  This doesn't include other fluids I get in like protein drinks or coffee.

I also find different ways to doctor my water to make it taste better, to me at least.  I don't do well with plain water so I add a drink mix, drops or something else to give it a bit of taste.  I usually use more water then recommended so I can just lightly add flavor.

Hang in there.  Things will get better and I bet by this time next year you will have your new normal figured out and will be very happy you had the surgery.

I was still nauseous at your stage also.  Zofran was my friend for 2 months.  Have you tried that?  And I also kept a drink by my bedside at night.  Overtime I woke up I made myself take 5 sips.  That helped.  It got better for me at 6 weeks.  I hope the same for you!

I'm not sure how you do your intake of liquids but my dr  said to drink 1 oz every 5 minutes (in 3 sips) im only 6 days out but it seems to work for me so far, i hope things get better for you

I am forcing down water today and I've drank more today than I have in the past. I'm sucking it up and to be honest I do feel better! Thanks so much for the insight and advice everyone. I truely appreciate you all taking the time to reply!

A tip from my surgeon that I have shared many times: To help prevent gas buildup and help relieve gas that is trapped, be sure to walk. And about 4 times a day stand and do gentle side to side twists, 10 each direction. Then do gentle side bends, 10 each direction. 

It really does help!
